do you care choosing the best responses on your discussions posted?

I have notice the "mark best response" sign a long time ago but I was not really aware that not choosing a best response would leave my discussion in my "unresolved" discussions until I clicked on it. I haven't choose best responses because I don't want other commentors feel that their responses are valued lesser than the chosen response. But then, reading the guidelines, I realized that marking the best response on every discussion makes sense somehow. It is like giving recognition to the responder who spend his/her time showing interest to your discussion. Though I appreciate every response I read, it actually makes me smile when I found people speaking their minds on my discussions. Afterall, mylotting is not just discussing but sharing views and selfless insights on whatever topic under the sun (and moon). So why not return the favor thru choosing the best response on your discussion?

Yes I select a best response, but I am never in any rush to do so. I still have some unresolved discussions from several years ago. I usually give best response purely on merit, so if a member posts a very interesting or worthwhile response then it is the obvious choice. This applies irrespective of whether or not the response is in agreement with my views. I have given quite a few best responses to posts that disagree with me completely, but if the response is well thought out then I will happily select it. If I do not ecieve any responses that I feel qualify, then I do not select a best response. It seems wrong to me to set a time frame and simply a mediocre or average response, which would be unfair to later posters. I am not deterred by a discussion already having a best response and will still respond if the topic appeals to me, which I have done numerous times.

I share your opinion on that point, if a comment is only given to those who agree then it is not a discussion, simply a list of approvals.

it's really disappointing when you go back to a discussion and notice that the OP only responded to and gave a BR to those that agreed with them. i never respond aiming for a BR. i'd rather respond to give a new angle or layer to a discussion, even if a BR has already been awarded.

"a list of approvals" is correct. it's like a response that says "yes, that's right. it's true, i agree" but forgetting to explain "how" or "why."

i guess it depends on what "best" response means to you. is it the one who "read" your mind? wouldn't that make it a guessing game? what about the one or two members whose views are the opposite or slightly off center but presented it well or even humorously?

This is very true hereandafter. I have always given best response to the one which I considered contributes most to the discussion, which is the only fair way in my mind. I have given best response to many responses that were in total disagreement with me. As long as the response has some interesting and valid points to offer then it is worthy of the title. The problem will always be a matter of personal interpretation because each of us would have our own opinion of how much a response has genuinely contributed to a discussion, so I am unable to guarantee that I will always make the right choice but all that any of us can do is try to make an honest assessment.

Best response for me has nothing to do with people thinking just like me. I rather like those people who are able to show me other sides of a problem. I learn from them.

That's right hereandthere. It still depends on how we assess the best answer. In my case, I choose the one that can present his/her response with sense, clarity and broad. It may or may not agree with me as long as he/she puts justifiable reasons for his/her response. Thanks asylum and marguicha for speaking your minds. It's great to know what "best responses" mean to each of us:)

I do check my started discussions from time to time. However, I mark best response after 2 months or more when I have more or less received all the possible answers. Yes, some people do respond after that, but they are fewer and far in between.

Also, sometimes there seem to be so many good responses that it becomes very difficult to choose the best answer. May be, they could look at starting an option like "Second best answer" and "A very great answer".

Yes, there are really times when the answers are too good and we find it hard to pick the best one. But I guess that's the purpose of having the option to mark the "best" response. There can only be one to be considered as the "best", the one that topped the rest. For me, choosing only one is better. It's like giving a medal to the sole winner. We can rate the other responders and tell them how helpful and great their comments are, guess that's all that matters anyway-b recognized.

Yes, I do care. It's my other way to be close with the other members in a way that their response was chosen.

Hi, I also noticed the best response in every discussions but I never thought of the importance of it. Not until you pointed it out . I thought we have to choose a best responder only if we like to, I rate their responses thu, I find it better than to chose a best response because I might find a respond best enough but the others might not. Thank you for this discussion, I think it's better to give a best response in my discussions from now on. It would be nice to make someone happy atleast in a very simple way.

Yes. But choosing the best response should be based on our own choice and not others' choice, so it's fine to pick what we think is the best- it's our discussion anyway. And as you've said, it's a simple way of showing appreciation and make them feel happy:)

Hey, First of all thanks for posting this discussion, otherwise I myself would have posted regarding this.lol I became a member of Mylot just a week ago, and its a nice place where you can share your views and help others and you're also helped. Just a couple of days ago, I saw on my profile that one of my comments was chosen as the best, whereas I almost forgot that topic where I commented. But even though that person wasn't any friend of mine nor I knew her. But she must have felt mine was helpful and marked it as the best response. I also created a few discussions where I was also helped and on one particular discussion I just liked one response which was very detailed and to the point, and that just moment I decided to mark that particular response as the best comment. I know others also spend their valuable times and come up here to share their opinions on various topics, and honestly I just appreciate those who response and at least I rate the discussions apart from choosing the best response which obviously has to be one.

Hi there! Guess that's the best thing about being here - to help and solicit views. I like the thought of soliciting opinions from people we don't know and see. It's simply giving and sharing advices without judging who the person is. Giving recognition is the least we can do for selfless people who spend their time reading and responding. You are a good responder, it's no doubt that your comments are marked and recognized:)

I am really behind at resolving my discussions. It is a good idea to visit all of your unresolved discussions to see if any new responses have come in. I do not feel badly if someone else gets best response and I tend to mark best response when the responder seems to have gotten inside my head and truly understands the questions. However I have also marked best response when someone had made me see things in a new light.

That's good. It's not about who gives the best words, it is who have touched and made us realize the answer to our discussion. Afterall, it's about sharing knowledge and be of help to others:)

I always forget to check my discussions and find a best response. I'm going to have to make a point to do that today. Thanks for the reminder.

I do go through when I have time and pick best responses. I do like to let a discussion pend (sometimes for well over a year) before doing so. However, I get unhappy when someone picks a best response the same DAY as they started the discussion. Now, having said that, when I have an urgent problem and I need advice, I will pick a best response when I decide what to do, one time it was only a little over a day that I did so, but I needed advice right now, I got some good advice and picked the best one.

Yes, it also depends on how urgent you need the answer to your discussion. But it's always fair to choose the best response after giving everyone the chance to respond:)

I always choose the best response. But I will not decide which is the best so early. I like to choose the best response after one week later. Since I like to give enough time for everybody to share the view. And it will be fair for me to select which is the best at that time. It is a kind of appreciation to the people who responded to my discussions.

I do care, the only problem i have is that i don't do it quite often enough. I like to award my best response to the responders, it just make the member feel good knowing that i recognize their effort and selfless contribution to my discussion, giving out the best response is a great way to reward the best among the good responses i often received from the members. Having read your discussion, i realize it is the time of the year again for me to go back on my unresolved tab and choose the Best responses for few of my previous discussion i left out again. Fine, i will take your recommendation and will return the favor soon.

Good for you Lampar. You said it pretty well, it is a way of rewarding the persons who gave selfless time and interest in your subject. We don't need to rush in picking the best response anyway :)

I choose best responses, but not always. I like to wait until more people have answered my post and some times I forget to check or don`t have the time. I also have problems sometimes when choosing between two very good answers.

That's the common problem we have-choosing the best. Mylotters are just too good to respond to anything:)

The best answer depends on many things, I think. whether this response has given you some valuable advice whether this answer your satnalo clear whether the topic is really whether you think the answer for the best. when there is a great one to give that answer. I gave that answer but also I have unresolved debates. so that's your right. nice day!

That's right. It depends on how consider a response to be the best. The helpful and sensible it is, the valuable it is.

Hi, i agree i give + to everyone at the same time when i respond back , but for best response i wait for some time . There are discussions of mine which i didn't select any best response i am aware of that. When i go back and check the discussions again then i give/select the best response.

I think it's better not to select the best response if you can't find anything best, in the end you're still giving proper recognition to the best responder plus giving credit to other commentors too:)
