Some people are suckers for shoes. Not me!

Some people are suckers for new shoes, or the latest computer game and don't seem to be able to stop themselves from treating themselves when they go out. Me? I rarely treat myself to anything when I hit the shops. But I do have one weakness and that is ... wait for it ... trees! I went into town yesterday to do our food shopping and ended up coming home with three lemon trees and two pineapple guavas! I justify it to myself by saying they are an investment in my future and my children and grandchildren's futures. Last time I went to that market I came home with ten olive trees. They're doing really well, and I can see myself adding to them not too long from now. Have you bought any trees lately? What are you a sucker for when you shop?

No. I wanted to plant a tree, too but I don't have a garden so I just planted tomatoes and they're growing so fast. They are in pots and I don't know how will they be able to live in pots. It's pretty interesting to learn that there are people who really loves trees. By the way, I remembered Phineas and Ferb when you said wait for it and I was smiling because I really paused while I was reading. :)

Tomatoes are heavy feeders, so make sure you give them lots of water, and some fertilizer. They don't mind being in pots, too much.

You should be a able to get a longer season from your potted tomatoes too as you'll be able to move them around.

Thank you for the tips. By the way, my brother bought two plants. Peppers. I don't know if they can live in pots but I will still try to take care of them. How i wish I have a garden like yours where I can plant a tree of my choice.

Well that's a good thing because now you'll have olives for the rest of your life and never have to buy them again. I've considered getting an apple or pear tree for my yard.. though I think the kids would eat them all before they had a chance to be brought in.. but that's okay really. At least it's a healthy thing they'd be eating. I don't think I have a weakness for anything besides clearance racks. I love checking out the clearance racks. I used to love shoes and clothes.. but I can't really afford that habit anymore.

Katsmeow, I've got various fruit bushes that you'd think never bore fruit, and then you look closely and find the little kid sized hollows underneath where my youngest sits and pinches it all! That's what it's there for after all so I don't grudge it, but I hope the bushes grow quick so there's enough for everyone soon! Redcurrants disappear the fastest, followed by raspberries. I feel better about buying trees than I'd ever feel about buying shoes as they'll last so much longer and bring a return as well. And they're cheaper too!

Your last line struck me. I could have said exactly that. Shoes and clothes - I have tons of each. But, sadly, can no longer afford to support my habit. At least I have plenty for now, as long as the styles don't change too much I'll be okay. Although it's not a happy situation, I felt somewhat comforted to know I'm not alone.

Once I have an item of jewellery on, it rarely comes off again so there is little point in my buying more.

I never treat myself on anything I only buy when I need someting. I always pay with cash and take the money with me I am able to spend. I do not buy trees. I have no space in my garden and the big ones (over 25 meter) I had in my garden I finally let someone cut down. They turned out to have cancer, had radiation bumps and were very dangerous. I hope to have a kind of healthier home now since from now on the sun should be able to shine a bit more in my garden and on the humid house as well. I also do not buy plants or flowers anymore. I think plants/flowers belong outside not cut off in a vase and die in no-time.

One could argue that my land NEEDS tree planting. It does actually, all part of the longer term plan only I tend to buy things on a whim rather than planning what will go where. I would never buy flowers for the house either. They're better outside where we can all enjoy them and they'll last longer too.

I would love to plant too but I've been putting it off because I am afraid that I might kill the plant- plus I don't know what materials I have to buy. I just think of planting on a pot because my father uses the backyard for his plants and I could not touch the soil there. Those are his. Anyway, as for buying, I am not an impulsive buyer and I rarely get attracted to fashion and technology stuff. Well, taking it back, I love fashion but I rarely buy new clothes because they are so expensive. I love thrift shops! It is the best place to find treasures! One thing I can't stop buying even if it is so pricey.. tada!-- BOOKS! I love books. I could live inside the pages of a book

I rarely buy fiction books as I don't tend to read them twice, but I could buy and buy and buy non fiction books which interested me. We don't have many bookshops around here which is probably a good thing! you could buy a plant for your father, he might appreciate your showing an interest in his garden and teach you more about it. From my experience, you have to be pretty rubbish to kill something so have a go! You learn from experience after all and we should all know how to grow at least some of our own food.

Violets would be better suited to a pot, but sunflowers are tough and strong and grow well all over the place. Why not sneak a few seeds somewhere that you pass daily and see if they survive?

I have so many fiction books now. Reading helped me a lot especially when I was in my teenage years. It feels like I travel to different places every time I read. Maybe one of my resolutions in 2013 is to plant a flower in a pot. I'll start small. Let us see if I can grow it I want to plant sunflower or violets

I've got a lot of space still to plant up and it's so much fun! Yesterday I planted the feijoas out, and actually decided to extend that area to include a lot more as a shelter for the vines.

I have a Norfolk Pine and a hibiscus inside now (they go out in the summer). There's a couple of plum trees in the back yard. I used to have a nectarine tree, too, but carpenter ants thought it made a lovely lunch and it lay on the ground one morning a couple years ago.

Plum blossom is spectacular so I have them on my list for closer to the house than these will go. And more cherries for the same reason. I have both already, but further away. I figure you can never have too many of either. Shame about your nectarine. We have peaches but they suffer with leaf curl which I've never found an effective organic solution for.

I, too have an affliction for trees, especially production trees..and Ihave so many, now, on this property..and they all seem like family. I have had to control my compunction now..as my water is well and collection...and a "seared summer" like last year put a toll on all of us! Due to the demise of services, on this Island and aging (me) I am entertaining selling, and I am already suffering "withdrawal anxiety" from my family of trees, as they can't go with me! Drats!
@GreenMoo (11834)

We had a particularly dry summer this one just past as well and we lost quite a few young trees as we just couldn't keep them all watered. Once they are established they will be OK, but they're vulnerable whilst they're young.

hi GreenMoo oh please do not laugh at me but as old as I am I collect Beanie Babies and just got a new one . A little monkey on ice skates. Its a hobby and a collection . I started with three that were left in the library where i worked .The stuff people left we kept in a large box and if they did not come back for their belongings in two months, we could pick from the collectiion if we wanted any of them. A snail, a duck and a moose were the start of mycollections.They are cute and funny and I just love to look at them. Some now are collectors items as they are no longer made. They make me hapy every time I look at them so guess its nmot too bad a hobby.

Why would I laugh? You can collect whatever you want, and if it gives you pleasure then it's fabulous. Beanie Babies wouldn't be my personal thing, but I don't think there's anything wrong with it at all. The monkey on ice skates sounds pretty cool actually! I think we have a few kicking around our house that the kids have picked up, and I can see the attraction for a collection. Take up less space and money than cars or something LoL

Trees! That’s adorable! I love those little trees.. what are they called, bonzi trees or something? I’m a sucker for cosmetics. See anything that says it will improve my skin tone, or make my pores smaller, or remove blackheads, I’m all over it haha!! That’s my weakness for sure!

Bonsai trees? I don't like them at all. They're just sort of unnatural. I'd rather see a full sized tree outside. Hard to fit one in your house though!

I love trees! I have never bought one, but my mother was a good one for buying trees and donating them. I do have 3 huge old maple trees in my back yard. They're beautiful. In the summer the best place to sit is underneath those trees. Having a canopy of green above my head is very restful. Just laying there looking up and seeing little patches of sky between the branches is a delightful pastime. I could stay there all day. It's very upsetting to me when I see the city cutting down trees to make room for a parking lot. What you're doing is great! How lucky you are.

My neighbour has some maples and I've dug up a pile of seedlings he doesn't want which I'll be planting once I've worked out where. They're indeed beautiful trees, but probably need a little more water than most of my land offers. You could plant a bunch of tree seeds inn old pots, and plant around the city when they're large enough. Counteract some of the tree felling by the city!

awww.. this is so nice. I never heard someone would be so into plants and trees in exchange of bread for the day. Yes, those investments are not just for your family in the future but also with the mother nature. That's a great move. Hmmm you gave me an idea .. I can plant trees here, since I have big backyard. I am not a shopper actually, because I am so lazy going to malls. I like shampoos and conditioner, I like the smell. LOL. so when I see cheap conditioner or shampoo I will surely buy 1 or 2. Trees??? never bought a tree in my life... I didn't have a chance to go to garden shop..(I don't know how to call the shop for plants sorry. ). but I like planting flowers... I will just ask from the owner of the plant for some seedlings. This is very good act GreenMo. thanks for this idea. yes, why not plant a tree.

And none taken Mavic. You could try growing some trees yourself from seeds if you don't mind waiting a few years. All the young oaks on our land are ones I planted from acorns I collected. Just remember that a tree may not look like it's parent as the original tree may have been grafted.

I have to admit I'm a sucker for shoes and bags, I can't help it especially if I went to my favorite shop I will not go out without buying a thing it's either a bag or a shoes. I love wearing shoes matches with my bag so ladylike but that was way back then when I didn't spent money wisely. Anyways, back to you, I love planting plants too it's so refreshing and a great help in our mother nature. I had an experienced in planting trees with my colleagues before as it was one of the requirement before we can get a permit in local government for certain works. It's enjoyable and great help also in the community. Good luck in your tree planting. :)

I am so "kuripot" when in terms of shopping. I don't buy a thing that costs more than half of my target price.I can use one bag for the whole year so long as it serves my purpose.But basically I love to buy new stuffs for my mother.Shoes, I buy only when I need.For plants, I admire healthy bonsai and all flowers but all of these are free whenever I visit the mountain in the island where my mom came from.I wish to invite you Ms. Ulan to my native land.

There is nothing wrong to have something that you are keen on and to fulfill your need on having it. What I am sucker for? I love shopping and I can shop anything with great pleasure. The most I love getting new clothes, shoes, bags, computer stuff, magazines, some great and interesting foods and spices, books. From all the things I mentioned my real weakness is clothes and shoes. I love buying clothes, it makes me feel good and happy. I also like browsing clothes in websites. Elegant clothes, sport clothes, jeans, t-shirts, jackets, shirts, trousers, blouses, dresses, tops. I have some clothes that I've never wore. It's the same with shoes. Well, if I have enough money I will have no problem buying anything that I want. But I always try not to spend money on non-reasonable items. I'm trying to prioritize purchases. I think that it's great that you found something that makes you happy. Keep buying trees and you will really have something in return after some time. If the question is what is really a valuable purchase, I will say - books! Because we can always learn something from books.
@GreenMoo (11834)

I agree on the books, but would probably not choose to buy the rest. I love non fiction books that I will refer to again and again. for fiction I now use my kindle.

When I was still having my job as co-manager of my brother in law's pharmacy, I would by myself either a bag or a pair of shoes. I am such an addict of those two. But now that I do not have work, I have tamed myself. I do not ask money from my husband if I want to buy something. I only buy myself something if I have my own money.

As I see it, not that you aren't a sucker for something but that you always devote your attention to your farm .Everything else such as shoes and the like pales compared to lemon trees,olive trees.What interests me is the pineapple guavas which belongs to Myrtaceae.I haven't heard of it before.It is said that it is also known as Feijoa,in honour of Portugal botanist Jo & atilde ;o da silva Feijo, who was born Brazil.

That's right, it's known as Feijoa around here but I didn't know why. I've planted the two I've bought now, and we've decided to make it a whole line behind some grape vines as they are evergreen and will make a nice windbreak. I am thinking ahead!
