Has Brendan Rodgers Spoken Too Soon?

December 16, 2012 6:39am CST
Last week Brendan Rodgers was talking of a top four finish for Liverpool. Yesterday they were thumped 3-1 at home to Aston Villa. Did he speak too soon or is it just a minor blip?

What would have devasted Rodgers more that the defeat might be the manner of it. Liverpool did all the running for most of the match, but Villa showed them how to be ruthless with the finishing. Liverpool were simply clueless in the final third with only Suarez seeming to try something to get a goal. But he also started becoming irritated as the game progressed. I think Rodgers and Liverpool have a tough task ahead of them if they want a top 4 finish and it is too soon to be talking up this possibility!! Cheers! Ram

Yes, Liverpool definitely have trouble keeping their powder dry in front of goal. They desperately need to improvise and try out an additional utility striker to support Suarez. Joe Cole may be worth a try - he's only small, but is arguably their most skilful player on his day. Maybe they could try dragging Sterling off the wing to a more central role. They need to try something before the transfer window opens as there are too many points to be won/lost before then.

Sadly I do not see Joe able to play that role successfully. I think his game has gone down pretty swiftly in the last couple of years. I think Liverpool will have to stutter all the way till the Jan window and hope that Rodgers makes a good signing up front to partner Suarez. Cheers! Ram

It's not minor blip, it's called underestimation.Somehow Liverpool thought this match will be too easy.Well Aston Villa got the word afterall.I hope Brendan and the staff take their lesson from all this and this never happen again.

With the benefit of hindsight it does appear to have been a blip possibly casued by taking Villa too lightly.Villa have been poor since that game while Liverpool have thrived so it does seem to be a flash in the pan.

Rodgers has spoken too fast and no this is not a blip. With only one striker in Suarez to spearhead their attack, Liverpool is only an injury away from a crisis. It is too much to just depend on one player to carry them to the top four finish, unless of course, that player is RvP.

I think Liverpool need the transfer window to come more than anyone. I am not sure that they are even favourites to land Walcott, despite him being a lifelong Liverpool fan. Chelsea are sniffing around and I think he would go there rather than anywhere else as he would not have to uproot from his London base. Maybe Liverpool should take a long, hard look at their two-goal Satuday destroyed...Christian Benteke!
