These days it is mostly by plane

The earth has land and sea. I know it is much easier to travel on land than sea. Years ago sea transport was popular but not any more for travelers. I live in Europe and I could if I had the time and money travel by train all the way to China or even Singapore if I had months to spare. My favorite countries are Samoa, Australia and New Zealand. I flew to each one of those lovely places. We went to South America earlier this year. My daughter asked a taxi driver to take her home. I knew that we had the Atlantic Ocean and Europe was over the other side of it. Do you like flying by plane? Which overland transport do you favor? Have you seen any of the oceans or seas?

I have been traveling a lot in different places in our country. I have done this for the last couple of years since I conduct training in different places. With all of these trips, 90 percent I have used the plane. It is fast and it saves me a lot of time. Though there were times that I have used a boat due to unavailable flight but if there was, I am sure that I would have taken the plane likewise.

I can see you are very used to traveling by plane in your home country. My home country is too small for me to need to travel by air. I have to fly when I go to another continent.

I always prefer flying over any mode of transport! I just adore the feeling of being in the sky and just generally everything about it. I don't mind trains too much but, then I don't go on them that often really so i can't really say how much I would enjoy them if I used them more often!

Hi Frankie. I see you don't travel by train very often. It is excellent that you love traveling by plane. It is a quick and easy way to travel.

I like traveling by plane since it spends less time on the way. Since we don't have a long vacation because of work, so traveling by plane seems to be the best choice for us. In these few years the high speed trains have a big improvement in China. Now it is also convenient to go to some far away places by the high speed train from my city. Since it is much more punctual than the plane, so in the future we may also consider to have the travel by the high speed train. For example, I heard that it spends about 6.5 hours going to Beijing from my city by the high speed train. Perhaps the airplane seems faster. However, compare to the waiting time and the delay flight, the high speed train will not be slower than the plane.

Hello Youless. I find what you say about some very fast Chinese trains excellent. Six and a half hours on a train sounds lovely to me. China is such a large country so I do understand some people prefer to fly on a plane. Yes, at airports there is much time spent waiting and the security lines can be long some.

It would look adventurous or exciting and may be romantic for some to travel by sea. However, traveling by sea is not so much prefered these days. So, many of us prefer flights, or if intra-country, we may take train route to some places.

Yes, traveling by sea is romantic. My friend had a honeymoon sailing around Southern Europe. It was a circular route so it wasn't to a place. I feel Europe, India and Russia are lucky to have excellent train lines.

I prefer to travel by train but I wouldbn't like it to be one of the high speed ones as I enjoy the view passing by slowly enough to notice things. I prefer trains because they feel a little like home. In a long distance train it is possible to go and have a meal, take a walk along the corridors, enjoy the view, have a comfortable seat and even a 'bed' for the night. Planes are confusing so I can understand why your daughter thought a taxi would be able to take her home. Flying from a hot country to a cold one is too stark a change, not just because of the temperature but also the vegetation. It is like travelling from one planet to another when the world becomes so different in such a short space of time.

Thanks for your wonderful response. Yes, to me a train can feel homely. I was on a train in America which was running five hours late. I felt anxious and was getting my baggage ready to get off. The ticket inspector said it will be around two more hours. I arrived at midnight and was safe traveling by bus all the way to Venice Beach. Yes, a plane is like a flying bus and that is why my daughter had no idea where were so far away from home. We stayed for six days at my dear friends house in Chile. I felt so happy and comfortable there. I felt so anxious arriving in Rio. Really I thought the coach has been too quick. I asked another passenger where is this. We found our accommodation there had been let to someone else. We were lucky to find somewhere else. We had a two bed for three people. We had to fly to get a head start back to Argentina. Those South American coaches usually take many hours.

Mexico used to have a good train line. I saw a documentary about kids going on board the train roof to get up to America illegally. It is 3600 miles away from the USA where you live so I appreciate you really have to fly on a plane.

Even though it took me 26 years to summon up the courage to get on a plane for the first time, it still sends shivers up my back if I know I have to fly, so I will avoid flying, once I am on the plane I am ok as I love the taking off, it's the other bits I don't like, the thought of nothingness underneath you and landing. I've only flown a handful of times, Cyprus, Amsterdam, Germany, Gran Canaria and Rhodes but they have been short flights. To visit some countries you simply have no alternative unless you take in a cruise.

Hello maximax. I have traveled by plane for only a few times, to be exact, four times. I love the feeling to be in a plane, especially when it starts to fly upwards into the sky. Up there in the sky, it is so blue and sunny. But to travel by plane is much more expensive than all the other transport means. I usually take a plane back to my hometown when train tickets are not available during the Chinese Spring Festival. Usually I travel by plane. If I am lucky enough, I can get berth ticket in a train, which is ideal for me, as I can lie down to sleep all the way to my destination. For short-distance travel, I take a bus for its convenience. Thanks for the discussion. Have a good day.

Hello Williamjisir. I can see you have traveled on planes four times and have enjoyed those experiences. It is a shame train tickets are hard to get at the time of the Chinese Spring Festival. I won't forget a movie I saw about a Chinese family trying to get train tickets at a time hundreds of people were waiting outside the train station.

It is much faster to fly and if I have to travel a place that is far away or if I don't have much time I prefer to fly, but if it is possible I prefer to travel by train because that gives me the chance to enjoy the view from the window while I am travelling. When I returned from Asia it took me 13 hours to fly from Vietnam to Paris, but it took me 18 hours to travel to by train from Paris to Denmark. A train journey definately takes more time, but if I am not in a hurry I think that it is very nice to travel by train. I have also travelled long distances by bus (30 hours or more), but I find that less comfortable than travelling by train.

I see that you back from your trip to Asia now. I hope you had a really lovely time. I feel tired and uncomfortable on a plane. As a result on a long haul flight I count the hours down and keep looking at the route map. On a train however long I enjoy that journey.

Personally I am not that keen on travelling by sea based on the length of time that it takes to reach your destination but it is a relaxing way to travel. I know that travelling by Land also is more time consuming than air travel.Though unlike sea travel you can see a bit of the country you travel through whilst in sea travel all you can see is ocean.Air travel is good due to the speed you can travel vast distances but it is a pretty uninteresting way to travel.I suppose for the best holiday you need to use a combination of methods of transport.

Thanks for your superb response. I am very keen on traveling to different countries. Yes, the speed of air travel is amazing. I like to see the countries I travel from and did that in South America. The distances were long.

Flying by plane is much preferred as we can go to our destination within a few hours only compared by sea and land. I haven't gone outside of my country, I only travel nationwide. In going to our capital city, I travel by plane in only an hour and 10 minutes to an hour and 20 minutes. Comparing it to sea travel, it will take about 2 to 3 days, by land according to them because I haven't experienced yet only over a day.

I have never traveled by plane, train or boat. I am afraid of flying and I don't think I will ever fly. As for the boat and train I might try one of them one of these days. I mainly travel by car and sometime bus. The closest I have been to the water is a beach or a lake. I'm sure it must be very nice to travel by train or boat and take in the beautiful scenery. But as for the plane, I really don't think I would ever get on one, my other family members fly all the time with no problem, but they haven't been able to get me on one yet!

I enjoy flying, once I am in the plane. I just don't enjoy the hassle we have to go through when we are at the airports. I understand the need for security but still, it's not a lot of fun. I prefer to travel by train, it is just more relaxing for me. I can get up and move around. The seats are bigger and there is just more room in a train. Your daughter asking a taxi driver to take her home reminds me of a story of another young girl. Her mother is Japanese and her father is American. She was born and raised in America. The first time that they were able to take her to Japan to visit her mother's relatives was when she was four years old. Her parents prepared her for this long flight and told her that it would take a long time to travel to Japan. They lived in a big city and the airport was on the other side of the city where they lived. They took a taxi to the airport. When they arrived at the airport, this little girl asked her parents, 'Are we in Japan yet?' They had never driven her to the airport before and of course, didn't realize that for their little girl, the drive to the airport would be a long drive for her.

I do like flying by plane, because planes are fast and I like to get to places quickly. But, usually I start to feel sick in planes. Maybe the plane isn't the right choice for me? My favourite overland transport is the train, I dont know why. Maybe I feel safer inside a train than on the road. I haven't seen any oceans in my life, because I haven't traveled by boat, yet. My goal is to see atleast one ocean in my life. My father likes traveling by boats and sailing, maybe I will, too.

I have been to beaches in Australia where I saw the Pacific Ocean. It was awful when a shark was sported and everyone rushed out of the sea in New Zealand up in North Land. I have stopped off in islands in the Pacific Ocean. It is a shame you feel travel sick when you fly on a plane. I can get ear pain on the plane's descent. Therefore I wear ear planes in my ears to avoid this pain. Yes, by train is a very safe way to travel.
