One way flight then travel home overland

When I was 18 years old I bought a one way airline ticket from London in England to Helsinki in Finland. I worked as a children's nanny in Finland and taught the little girl how to speak English. When my placement ended I caught a train and a ferry over to Stockholm in Sweden. I used my inter rail pass to get back home after a budget trip around Europe. I did a one way ferry ride from Belgium to England.
Why is the immigration not usually keen on one way tickets?
Would you like to get a work permit for a particular country?
Can you think of a one way flight and the journey overland back home?

In some countries you officially have to prove that you intend to leave the country again, but they don't actually ask to see a return ticket. Before I visited Vietnam I was told that they wouldn't accept a one way ticket at the airport and I thought that they were going to check whether I had a return ticket or not, but they never did. I know that many other countries have similar rules, but I am not sure how seriously they actually take the rule, I guess it is different from country to country.
I have worked abroad in the past, but I stayed in Europe and I was able to work there without a work permit. Outside the European union I would need a work permit. If I was going to work abroad again I would choose one of the countries in Asia, but I am not sure which one. I really liked Cambodia and it could be interesting to work there for a while, but many of the other countries in Asia also attract me so it would be a difficult choice
I would like to buy a one way flight to the eastern part of Russia and travel back via the Transsiberian railway. That would give me the chance to see a big part of Russia and I think that it would be really interesting to travel across the country like that. The Transsiberian railway ends in Moscow and from Moscow I would go to St Petersburg. I would spend some time there and then I would travel back through the Baltic states and Poland.

I am quite envious that you got to see Sweden, that is a country that I have always had on my 'to visit' list but somehow never got round to going there. That must have been exciting for you at just 18 and going all that way on your own, quite an adventure. I have never thought about working abroad to be honest, although in theory I have the qualifications to be a child's nanny, I still have my NVQ3 in childcare. I wonder if other countries are as prejudiced about men working with children as we are in the UK.
