Most of you are probably unaware that for the last 4 months a US marine has been in a Mexican prison, where his life is threatened regularly. He's in there because, before crossing the border, he asked border patrol agents how to properly bring a shotgun across the border. He had all his papers and the gun was properly registered and border patrol agents told him to show his weapon and papers to the Mexican border agents. He did so and was immediately arrested and thrown into a Mexican prison among the general population. For four months his family has been trying to get him released. Outside of Fox News and one local CBS station in Florida, there has been absolutely ZERO media coverage of this. Several congressman and senators have pushed for him to be released, even encouraging bocyotts of Mexico. What has our president said on the matter? Nothing... http://poe.house.gov/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=8872:let-us-marine-jon-hammar-go&catid=102:speeches&Itemid=1 http://miami.cbslocal.com/2012/12/09/florida-family-pleads-for-sons-release-from-mexican-jail/ http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2012/12/20/lawmakers-press-administration-on-jailed-marine-point-finger-at-us-border/

Taskr36 FINALLY!!! Jon Hammar is out...I blame Obama and Hillary for paying no attention to this...even if there were behind the scenes talks, there should have been public comdemnation and not just from Fox and O'Reilly....

I agree. It's one reason I'm all for the wall barring Mexico from easy access to the USA.

I'm with you on this. But CNN did pick up the story ... way after Fox. The update as far as I know is that he is going to be released and coming home for Christmas which might mean he's on his way. But you're right. There was nothing mentioned about this on mainstream media and our president did nothing (nothing we heard about). Remember he did nothing for our embassador and three fallen seals. No moment of silence, no flags half mast. I'll get off my soapbox now.

And now, 2019, some damn fools want to impeach Trump because he wants to build a wall to separate us from Mexico, are they nuts or what?

I've been following the story of Jon Hammar on Fox and praying for his release. I do NOT understand why he is not back home. The prison is in an area dominated by the Gulf Cartel and the new president doesn't have the integrity or the guts to order his release, as far as I can tell. They even tried to extort money from the family! Judging from the apparent inaction on the part of the State department and WH, I would say you're right that Obama doesn't care about it. Jay Carney didn't even know about it during a regular briefing when he was asked about Hammar. But--even the Huffington Post is carrying the story. If Jon gets enough media coverage maybe the WH will be forced into action.

I saw that, Adoniah, last night and it brought a big smile to my face! If the state department did anything, they certainly kept it secret. How shameful. Right now I am ashamed of my country's government. Thank God for CNN and FOX for keeping the controversy stirred up. If not for them he may still be rotting there, chained to a bed in a filthy room.

I have not seen any credits to the government over his release...a lawyer and the mexican gov. negotiated the release.

Taskr, I have heard of this story, and I think that it was talked about when the new Mexican president was in Washington. What we should have done was hold him hostage until they release this former Marine. It is obvious that no one in Mexico cares about laws, and they could care even less about what our president says. I am sure if we held back their foreign aide money, we would see this Marine returned ASAP. It is sad that it takes money for some people to do the right thing.

On the plus side an article was just printed today that said he'll be released. Apparently his lawyer got the evidence excluded based on a violation of his rights under the Mexican constitution. While I'm sure the exclusion is technically valid, I think it was the massive outcry happening in this country and big names in cable news like Bill O'Reilly spreading the word that put pressure on Mexico to release him. There were also a large number of senators and congressman from both parties demanding his release. I'm just sicked by the fact that Obama was not one of these voices. If I were president, I would say "Release him NOW." If they did not release him within 24 hours I'd explain the 3 things that would happen. 1. Trade boycott 2. End to all aid going to Mexico 3. We would use military action to recover our captured marine.

I heard a story last night that money changed hands and that is what got him release, which I am sure wouldn't surprise anyone. It is good to hear he will be home, safe and sound.
