I went to the farmer`s market today to but the veggies and fruit I need for Christmas diner. While I was there, I came across some asparagus and decided to treat me to some for Chrsimas. I usually don`t buy them because they are never very cheap. But at this "mercado", vegetables and fruit are as cheap and as good as you can get them here. So I bought a kilo (Almos US$4). I just cooked some of them and ate them with homemade mayo. Yummy! Do you treat yourself with something good to eat once in a while? What are your favorite treats? I like salty things and pickles.

wow.. I could almost taste it, specially with the mayo and I do hear, crunch? wow.. yes, treating ourselves is not. we work hard, we earn so we deserve to treat ourselves, because if our bodies we complain, we could be paying higher price. LOL. hmmm.. I think I want to treat myself with pizza. Junky but I miss eating it. There is no pizza and burger to where I am now.. such a remote place.
Good for you and good for pampering yourself a little. you deserve it.

Thank you Mavic. I love to cook so for me it is easy to treat myself once in a while with my favorite food.

Hi marguicha, I bought some asparagus where I usually shop for my veggies. The label said it was from either Argentina or Chile (can't remember). This was over a year ago and it was the best asparagus I ever ate! I usually steam it and eat it with butter and salt. I've never seen any from there again, only from other places. Two of us ate it and neither one of us could get over how great tasting it was. I really love asparagus and it grows wild out in the country near here. I usually buy local if I can because there are lots of farms here. As for treating myself, I like lots of stuff.
Anything vanilla, or salty or, like Mavic (above) I love pizza. Last night I went to the store for cat food and looked in their bakery. There were so many delicious looking desserts for Christmas.
I decided to get a treat for myself but couldn't make up my mind. Finally I decided on a container of 4 small chocolate frosted brownies with red & green frosting in the middle to look like holly berries & leaves. I came home and ate all four of them.
They were delicious!

I learned yesterday here at mylot, in another post, that we export asparagus. I am chilean. It`s incredible that I even learn things about my own country at my favorite site! These asparagus I bought were very tender. I like pizza once in a while, but I prefer to make my own.

We have a nice climate so we export a lot of fruit. Besides we don`t have some fruit pests other countries have. But since we have become exporters, fruit is more expensive for us. And when I say "we" export, I am not talking about "we, the people"

The store where I shop for fruits/veggies is Trader Joe's. They have many imported fresh produce items from South America. Argentina and Chile are the two I remember. Funny how we learn about things. I knew you were from Chile, that's why I mentioned the asparagus. I have never had such great tasting asparagus in my life. I've bought it since then, from both countries, but never had the luck to get the same flavor. I also like my making my own pizza.

Green or white?
The white is good steamed, then sauteed in a bit of butter with a sprinkle of sugar on top.

I buy the green ones. They are much cheaper. Also, the thicker ones are more expensive so I buy the thin ones. I buy them for weight so it doesn`t matter. I steam them and eat them either with a vinagraitte or with homemade mayo.

Glad u treated yourself. I'm a glutton when it comes to fresh veggies. Hate that they are gone here till next summer. I do treat myself, too much. Buying groceries has always been one of my weaknesses. Don't spend much money on myself but am going to have good food as long as i can buy it.One of my treats is buying fresh lemons for my ice tea.I buy more treats than i need most of the time, lol.

I would be lost w/out my freezer. i hope u can get one. They sure do come in handy. U can freeze most anything. U can cook ahead & have things handy if u have unexpected company, stock on things when they are on sale at the grocery etc. I think u would love having one as much as u cook.

It also happens to me, Jo. I was thinking yesterday that if I came into a money I don`t know yet if I`ll get, I want to buy a deep freezer. It sounds absurd as I live alone. The freezer on top of the fridge should be enough. But It would be awesome to be able to put away all the apricots and use them during the year as juice. In this time of the years there are lots of very unexpensive fruits and veggies. I could put aways some of everyone of them. Today I made pesto for one of my daughters with the basil I have in my veggie patch. I Have enough to eat pesto all year around and it`s a lot better when you make it immediatly after collecting the basil. I think fresh lemon is a lot better that bottled one.

I never eat imported fruits, except for bananas and pineapples which we don`t produce. We have most of the rest of the fruits and I buy them on season.

It depends a lot on the climate. We have a mild climate so we can export fruits and veggies to other places.

It`s hard here, even during the summer months. They are a lot cheapier being brought in from other countries. I just bought 10lbs of carrots locally grown, but sadly they wont last long, once their stock runs out then you have to get them from other countries. I was watching a show once, that shows how they preserve the fruit and veggies to ship them to other countries, some soak them in javex, or other chemicals.

You ruined good asparagus with mayo? Ugh! I cook my asparagus in a pan with a little butter and water to the crisp tender stage. I do not eat it with anything other than that. I have had some that is raw that was on the buffet table for dipping into some kind of holladaise sauce. I usually treat myself to a bunch that makes two servings at least two times per month. I look at the cost of fresh fruits and vegetables versus the cost of junk and snack foods and the 'extra' for the fruits and vegetables seems to be justifiable. My favorite treat food is Alaskan king crab legs steamed at the market. Now that is something that I have to save up for because I live inland away from the coastline.

There are tastes for everyone. I love asparagus with homemade mayo. My mayo has nothing to do with the one you buy: In my country we have fairly unexpensive veggies all year around, although they have their season. Now we have fairly unexpensive fruit too. I`m waiting for the apricots from my apricot tree. They will be ripe next week, I think.

I like fish and I must eat more because it is healthier and helps a diet. But fresh fish is expensive at this time of the year in my country

Hi marguicha,
here it is winter. I think you are enjoying summer. Our winter is the best season. Now we get plenty of vegetables and fruits in the markets.Cauliflower, cabbage, tomato, potato and various type of pot-herbs are available in the markets. Price is also cheaper. I like cauliflower very much. The recipe of food item made by cauliflower and potato is so yummy. I also enjoy tomato salad. I become almost vegetarian in the winter.

I don`t have any recipe that mixes cauliflower and potatoes. I would love to hear about it as I love both cauliflower and potatoes.

That does sound really yummy to eat. Asparagus isn't very cheap from where I live either. The ones that are cheap usually look kinda wilted and old and somewhat brown. We just have the asparagus steamed with a little bit of butter and some salt. It does taste really good to eat when they are fresh. I don't really know why they make your pee smell bad after you consume it.

These asparagus I bought were very fresh and tender. It was a pleasure to eat them. I don`t know either what do they have that makes pee smell bad after you eat it. It doesn`t happen with any other food.

I`m addicted to chocolate, so I never buy any. I eat them when someone brings me chocolates as a gift. But I, like you, avoid something I like because it`s not healthy.

We do that here too friend, my wife buys fresh asparagus and turn to the most delicious chicken cream of asparagus soup,
, yeah a little bit expensive but cheaper in the long run instead of buying imported canned Campbell soup when we crave to have one. Asparagus is very good for your condition my friend

I love asparagus cream, louie. I have heard that asparagus is good for cancer. But I am not so sure that I believe in all that people say about food being good for this or that. I do believe that eating well balanced meals and trying to live well balanced lives help with every thing. Merry Christmas, dear friend!

I only go to that mercado when I go to the hospital (it is very near) because it`s too far from my house and it`s not worth it when you cook for one person. But today I had to buy for our Christmas diner so I bougyt some incredible offers. I bought strawberries that will use for punch and smoothies, besides giving part of it to my mom. Tomorrow I`ll start my Christmas cook work. Yesterday was the cookie decorating business with Vicente. We both had fun
