Hikikomori comes from words which means pulling away. Most hikikomori are male, some are female though. Causative factor was not very clear, but the public mostly blamed family factors, where the loss of a father figure for working from early morning until late at night did not have time to interact with their children, and the mother is considered to pamper her children (probably because the number of children a family owned Japan was little). Academic pressure at school, harassment at school (school bullying), and video games in Japan. Maybe it could be said they withdrew from the competition pressure of students, economic agents or employees in the state of his incredible competition. The exact number is not known for sure, there were counted about 1 percent of the population. This means that about 1 million Japanese is hikikomori. Counts are more conservative ranges between 100 thousand and 320 thousand people are hikikomori. They are usually 13-14 years old, although sometimes there are people who become hikikomori even more than 10 years, some people have become hikikomori until age 30 years old or more. What they do? course only silent in their rooms and grappling with the virtual world, watch anime, read manga, and play video games. So how do they make ends meet. hikikomori usually come out once a month to buy supplies for their "shut in"'s needs, they still get money from their parents, sometimes they force parents to get what they want. What is your opinion with this phenomenon, don't you think it's exclusive to Japan's culture or it's already happened to other countries as well?

It might be. I don't really know about people like that in states though there are people who claim to be. There are children that prefer to stay in the house watching tv or playing some kind of game on the computer, dsi, Wii, etc. due to the parents not wanting to deal with them, but its nothing to the same extreme of an hikikomori .
