Discussion deleted after chosen for the Digest

Going through my email this morning, a friend's discussion was deleted. It only said that it was deleted-no reason was given. I was disappointed because he was wishing his friends here a Merry Christmas! He even offered a hug-this has been an absolutely horrible holiday for me. So it really made me sad.
I continued on through my email, responding to everything. Once I was finished, I decided to go through the digest. Strangely, the first discussion selected for the digest happened to be the discussion that was deleted! I wanted to ask an Admin about it, but the topics offered through the Contact Us link didn't really even come close to my question.
I've been a member here for about six years, but this is the first time I've seen the digest contain a discussion they've just deleted, at least that I can recall. Don't you think that they should hold off creating the digest until they're assured that each discussion won't be deleted?

The post in question could not be viewed as a discussion and the poster knows that well, as he is a longtime member and often shares his knowledge of the rules with others.
But, as I am sure you have noticed that poster has a little fun, and I quote, 'tweaking noses'

Yes I do, and he acknowledged that already. It is frustrating though-I had had such a rotten holiday and his positive post made me smile.

Being chosen for the Digest has nothing whatsoever to do with whether a discussion is 'legitimate' or not. It quite often happens that a discussion included in the Digest gets deleted, especially after a weekend or a holiday when Admin hasn't been around.
Christmas (and New Year/Easter/Birthday &c) wishes are violations of the Guidelines because they are 'celebrating a milestone' and, in any case, are very likely 'duplicate topics'. If people would only remember that MyLot is a place for good quality discussions and is NOT Facebook, where you can post any silly nonsense, we might get by a lot better!

If the deletion notice had included a bit more information, like "it was deleted for celebrating a milestone", I'd probably had not started this discussion.
How do you feel about myLot requiring new members to take a mini test prior to being allowed to join? Or to review the FAQs prior to being allowed to join? Maybe provide instructions and examples of allowable discussions in multiple languages with particular emphasis that they must to be in English?
This is a GLOBAL site, with people from all sorts of countries. Do you think that perhaps myLot should stop paying us and start to accept that we're a community? Getting paid is nice and all, but with these kinds of rules, it's not wonder people just don't understand.
I'm sure that this discussion will be deleted; in fact, I expect it. I'm asking too many questions.
I also feel that being in the digest SHOULD have something to do with a discussion being good or legitimate instead of being about a popularity content. But wait, that's how life works, and I should probably get over that by now.

But that also might be because they're in English and quite a few new members are here to learn English? I came across a new discussion the other night in another language. Since someone already told the original poster that all new discussions must be in English, I moved on rather than belabor the point.

As has been mentioned, the digest is an automated feature of the forum software. I've worked in other communities that have the same thing. The digest is intended as a capsule or snapshot of the activity that has taken place in any given day -- and that activity will also include deleted discussions, unfortunately. The digest doesn't highlight the "best" discussions... just the really active ones. I was thinking that, in addition to "celebrating a milestone," the discussion might have been deleted under the guideline that tells us not to "start a new discussion unless you have something of substance to say." Holiday wishes type discussions can be created over and over, by so many users at myLot, that responding to them really doesn't bring any "value" or substance to the community in general. It's my understanding that we're encouraged to convey those wishes via the private messaging system here versus creating a multitude of discussions for the same purpose.
Having said that, I'm really sorry you've been having a terrible holiday

I really think that perhaps the digest should feature discussions that are well within myLot guidelines. Or at least delete discussions that violate their standards more quickly prior to being accidentally submitted to the digest. This is just another example of how the digest is more of a popularity content than anything else.
Thanks for the hugs. Not speaking to my daughter for more than six months has pretty much ruined everything. I just don't really care about anything any more...

It was fun while it lasted. Admin was kind enough to allow the discussion to grace the occassion and had everyone joined in the Xmas virtual celebrations. I believe admin would not disgrace their own rules as the discussion was obviously against their published guidelines so need to be deleted. Being in the digest does not bullet proof any discussions from mylot chopping board. I went through such disappointments in the past seeing my discussions with responses hitting the roof and published in the digest only to end up in mylot bins. It was shocking but I gradually learn to accept that admin were only doing their jobs to enforce the guidelines when the need arises.

It is true that the admins were doing their job by deleting it, but it is quite frustrating to discover a discussion that had begun to boost my down mood was deleted. Usually he gives you a warning: beware because this discussion will be deleted, but maybe he had too much eggnog when he created it?

I wonder if one person put that discussion in the digest and then another one came along and deleted it. Hmm. When I write to 'contact us' I get a email back saying they have gotten it and that I won't recieve an email regarding the subject back.I think there is a 'Other' category isn't there? I would advise you to contact GoAskAlice. He atleast will look into it and give you an email back so you know what is going on. He gets burried thought at times so it takes a while to hear back often. I have been a member for six years or more too and occasionally there are problems. If they did a weekly digest they might be able to hold off, but doing a daily one makes it difficult to wait about such things as this. I would contact GAA and see what happens with that.

Thanks for the suggestion.
Hasn't anyone thought it odd that we're supposed to contact GoAskAlice-and Alice turns out to be a HE?
I respect their decisions-I see where I was wrong since it WAS a conversation about a milestone and from what I understand, quite popular too. I'm just glad that I got a hug out of the author before it was deleted-it was such a bad holiday for me.

Maybe he didn't want people to know he was a man? I am glad it all turned out okay.

I understand why, but I do think that they should reconsider how they determine their digest discussions. Thank you for your contribution.

I think we should not confuse the work of the administrator.
but if your friend you feel as if your discussion is deleted can try administrator is your right.
nice day!
Merry Christmas!

I tried to contact the administrators, but couldn't find a subject line (that they've preselected) that worked. But I'm not going to belabor the point-he was really being inclusive in his greetings and if not celebrating a particular milestone is what myLot wants, then they need to make it across the board and remove ALL milestone discussions.
