It seems really nice to get back into sewing and I am having to learn how to do things all over again. Yesterday it took my practically all day just to thread and set up my sewing machine. I just kept on doing everything wrong. And funny thing was when my hubby came home he was able to find out what I was doing wrong.
Cause I was just wondering why my sewing machine wasn't sewing and I kept getting an error message saying that my bobbin wasn't placed in correctly. So I spent the whole day redoing the bobbin and my hubby came home and funny, come to find out my bobbin was incorrect because I threaded the machine wrong.
But now that I got that working now today I am working on my first project cause basically I was about to give up yesterday. I was getting sad cause I really wanted to get back to sewing and all. But things weren't working out. But thanks to my hubby we fixed it. My first project is going to be a vest for me.
I always wanted a vest and I could never find any in a store here and I'm like well, I guess people don't wear vest any more or at least the ones I like. The ones that are all professional looking and something you would wear to a job interview or something like that. Then I was like I could just sew my own. So now, I'm going to sew my vest and I'm going through all the instructions because I want it to turn out right. I can't wait until it is finished and I'll post up a picture. Right now, I have the pattern all cut out and the fabric cut out. So now I just need to sew it together. I keep going through the instructions on how it needs to be sewed so it can turn out nice.
Anyone else doing any sewing projects. Does anyone have any pointers for me? Please share.

I would probably read the instruction manual on the sewing machine. Hope you enjoy making your vest.

Yeah I've been reading that thing over and over again, it just seems so confusing and really hard to see all the pictures and stuff. I guess that is why it took me so long to get the sewing machine set up. I had to look up a video on youtube on how to thread your sewing machine and bobbin and that's how my hubby figured out I threaded it wrong.

DO they have a store in your area? Maybe you could go into the store and get some tips. They could probably show you how to thread it. You might even find help online. Better pictures and that sort of thing.

Yeah there are a few stores that I can go to that can help me. I think I will continue on googling things out to help me cause the book isn't really helping me at all. I may have to do that with the sewing instructions, but actually that one seems a little bit better to understand.

Hi trisha. Glad that you are taking up sewing again. I love to sew for the simple fact that I can make something for myself that you would not ordinarily see in a store. I made a vest several years ago from 2 different skirts. One skirt I used for the body and the other one I cut into strips, sewed them across the back of it, and then cut along those strips to make fringes. It took a long time to cut those, too. Whew!!
I have a blouse cut out that I need to get sewn together. It been ready for me for a year and a half now.
You can find some nice sewing books in the local library. If not, you can look online for some tutorial videos. One good place to do that is youtube.
Happy sewing!!!

And trisha27...do a search on the internet....and join some clubs/forums. Right now I am quilting...so I joined Missouri Star Quilt Company....and they have a forum where you can ask questions and offer helps and they have a tutorial part the owner shows all kinds of projects and there is a store to buy stuff and there is a gallery where every member (free to join) can post pictures of what they have done. There are more, but that is the one that I work with most. But there are tons of them. And...do a blog search to... I have so many that I follow (every time they post something I get an email and can go read it) and they tell about what they've done, what they've learn and things like that. There are days I literally have to force myself to get off the PC and back to the sewing machine!

That's what I like about sewing too, that you can make outfits and stuff so that's why I got back into it. I got the idea when I wanted to buy certain clothes for myself and I just could never find it in a store. So I was like why not make it myself and I've seen a lot of patterns of clothes I can make for clothes that I'd like to buy but could never find in the store. So this will be exciting.
Yeah I've been searching about tutorials on sewing and that's how I finally figured out I threaded my machine wrong and is why my bobbin wasn't working right.
so I may keep looking into videos as well seeing if there are any classes given around town so I can brush up on my sewing. I never thought about the library, so I may check that out too.

I sew quite often, but never anything complicated, mostly just crafts. I've made sandwich bags, fleece hats, and gift bags.
I have sewn a couple of dresses and a Halloween costume. For me, the key is careful ironing. It seems like if I take the time to iron nicely and pin a lot, the sewing is a lot smoother.

I am not that good at sewing. I have a hard time sewing a straight line, and there is no place to put my sewing machine and even if it did, it would need replacing. I used to have a threader on my machine, but it broke off and I have not found any needle threader at the sewing place that was not in a pack of needles.

Your tale reminds me of my Mom. She was having problems with her sewing machine and was swearing a blue streak at it. Finally I went in to see what the problem was. Mom was determined to find the problem, but relented and let me take over. I took the bobbin out of the machine, lifted the case out and found the problem instantly. There was a thread stuck in the works. I removed the thread and the machine worked great.
A few days later a neighbor came down to get me, her machine wasn't working. I opened up the machine and took a look...I found enough lint in the bobbin area to knit a sweater! After I removed all the lint the machine worked like charm.
Is the vest going to be lined? That is going to up the difficulty factor. I would say to post your problems but I am not receiving any notifications from the Lot, so I can't depend on that. So, if you need help you could email me at bearyebears@yahoo.com for any help. I've been sewing since I was 3, so I may be able to help you out. I currently am sewing teddy bears together. I make teddy bears for a living, and have been making them for 30 years. So, I may be able to help you out with your project.
