I first would like to say I have never liked the word diet and I still don't! I know I need to lose weight but I need to make life style chances! I need to to change my eating habits not be put on a diet which I am not going to like or stick with! I have to do it my way! I just need to be more disiplined and keep working at it! I say this because other people have told me to try different diets! They mean well but they aren't me! This is one of my goals this year.

Sweetheart, if diets work, why are there so many of them? Why are new ones always cropping up. Diets do not work. If you go on a diet, lose weight, go off the diet, go back to the way you were, you will also put the weight back on. Like you say, you have to do something you will always be able to do. You need to be more active for one, start small and work up to something you are comfy with...say, aim for half an hour 3 or 4 times a week. Make sure you eat the foods from the five food groups in the correct capacity. Tell yourself you can do it, believe you can and it will happen. I'm in the same boat as you but you are a lot younger than me.

I said that diets don't work for me mostly because my sister-in-law monica mentioned I should try the diet she is on! Not happening! Same with my neice-in-law Annie who suggested I try her diet! I know people want to help but they are doing it the wrong way! I need to do it my way! Sometimes I wish they could be me in their shoes and see how it makes them feel!

Good for you! Life styles changes are really where it is at. I used to save every diet book I could get my hands on until I realized that diets just didn't work. Starting by making life style changes like parking further away from stores and going for walks, etc. really helps you get in the habit of better ways of doing things. And every one has a different way of doing these things. We are all individuals with different bodies and sensitivities. Good luck to you!

I have not really started doing anything at the moment. I have been off the past 9 days for Christmas vacation and tomorrow I will be back to work. Once I am on my normal schedule it will help! Exercise is going to be on my list, too! I know I can do it! I just need to keep up a positive attitude!

Hi Blue, I have mostly had the opposite problem from you...underweight. Trust me it is just as bad with much less advice to be found. I will say though that there was a time when some meds I was on caused me to gain too much weight. Losing them was hard, I found after having formed a pattern of eating where I could anything and everything without worry...actually hoping to gain. Diets did not work for me either. I found that by just watching my portions and cutting out things like chips & dip, fast foods etc that the pounds just came off. I say that I cut them out but if I had a strong craving for junk food, I did indulge and then got back on track. I think that if I hadn;t then the craving would just of gotten stronger until I caved and over-indulged.

If my my sister-in-law Monica and my neice-in-law annie didn't mention the diets they are on,this discussion would not of started! I need to cut out sweets, especially chocolate! I sometimes have like chips or fritos. I need to give them up! Being off the last 9 days for Christmas vacation didn't help either! I know when I get back to a normal schedule it will help. I also need to get a positive attitude! Easier said then done! It never ends!

Its not easy at all but I believe you can do it. Don't give everything up all at once. Cut back slowly. And once you are used to cutting out the junk then you should allow yourself at least one day per week that you can eat anything you want. That way it won't feel like you are depriving yourself of everything you love.

Diets don't work. While people may temporarily drop weight, it almost inevitably comes back. Then, you get the cycle of yo-yo dieting. Healthy eating has to be for life. You are right in that you need to make permanent lifestyle changes.

I hate when people say try a diet! Especailly some family memebers! Like my sister-in-in Monica and neice-in-law Annie! Both are on diets they want me to try! Not going to happen! I appreciate the concern but put yourself in my shoes for once! Then you will understand me better!Diets don't work! Not for me or anyone!

The first three letters of diet define it so well! I have never been able to diet, I love my food too much, in my teens I would constantly diet, binge and diet again, I would end up putting on more weight, I had no willpower when it comes to food. It was only when I started going to the gym that the weight fell off, I went from 16 stone to 12. My waist size shrunk from 38" to 32" Now I am my forties, I still go to the gym and have never dieted since, it's harder to lose weight now, and I am "36 but a lot is muscle now that I train on the weights as well as the cv. Good luck with your goal. Diet is a big no no, I eat what I want in moderation.

My mother rarely had to diet during her life but put on ten pounds in her 80s that she lost. She refused to call it a diet, but an menu plan. She cut back on bread and sweets but it was easy for her, as she loved vegetables and all the stuff we're supposed to eat to be healthy! As for me, I've struggled all my life with fat. I've had success recently when I stopped eating wheat products and lost 5 pounds. I've kept it off with great effort since I could not cut out the wheat products for long. If you read Wheat Belly by Dr. William Davis (available at libraries), you'll see why. I'm going to continue to avoid most wheat products! Another thing I've done is examine why I love certain foods. For instance, I love Hawaiian pizza but what is it that drives my craving? It was the combination of Canadian bacon, pineapple and bell pepper. So I mixed some up. heated it with a little spaghetti sauce and spread it on toast. It was great, just like a Hawaiian pizza, and I saved hundreds of calories. Maybe you can pick apart your preferences and save some calories. I'm determined to drop some weight this year but I'm not going to beat myself up about it. I lose faster when I pay attention to what I really want and cut portions in half instead of "dieting". That way I have no cravings and combined with eating what I really want, it seems to work. Slowly, but that's healthier for you. Good luck! I hope you'll share your progress with us.

I started this discussion because two memebrs of my family tried to talk me into trying the diets they are on! I appreciate they are concerned and want to help. This is not the right way! I need to do this on my own! I Know I need to eat more protien. I have to still work on sweets, especially chocolate and exercise! There is more but this is some of the things I need to do!

I don't like the word diet either, as I have been on them a few times, and it like some have said, that once you st5op, you put the weight back on, and then some. To me, it is a waste of time even starting one, knowinf full well, you are going to put the weight back on again. I have been struggling with my weight for years now, and just about ready to give up, as it seems hopeless. The thing of it is, I like all the stuff that aren't good for me, and I just have to tell myself not to buy them,as if I don't have them in the house, then I am not tempted to eat them. That is kind of why I started drinking my fruits and veggies every day. It makes me feel better, and supposed to give me energy, but since I haven't been taking the drinks to long, I haven't noticed much change in that either. I am also trying to lose weight, as it is supposed to help with the weight, and there again, I haven't seen anything on that yet. I haven't lost weight, but I haven't gained any either;. For that I am glad, as I have a tendency to put way to much weight on, and just can't lose it. I know I will one day, but it will just take time. Take care, and I wish you a lot of luck in your weight loss plan. take care.

Diet chart - Healthy diet chart
Hey there! Happy new year! U used not to like the word diet either before but when I lose the deal with my hubby I had to eat tons of veggies and I am not a veggie lover! When I started it I found it really delicious and healthy! I used not to exercise before too but now that I got my wii fit plus I'm doing it. I used to love junk foods before too but now I don't want them and I am putting lot of discipline specially for food intake?? just to be healthy.

My best bet is to eat healthy. Easier said then done! I am not much of a fruit or veggie lover. I am a emontional eater and I still have not been able to shake that! Diets aren't for anyone and I have two family menbers who are on them! They were the ones who got me the idea to start this discussion! Both have tried to get me on them and I am not going to! I appreciate the concern but I have to do it my way! The sooner the better!

The only person that knows your body and what it responds to is you. The only way that I have effectively lost weight is cutting calories and working out. Even for just 20 minutes a day. And if you keep track of the calories you eat on a regular day, and subtract it by 500, if you stick to the new number of calories, you'll lose at least 1-2 pounds per week. I'm on a 1200 calorie intake per day, and working out (walking, jogging, etc...) for 30 minutes per day and have lost 2 pounds in 4 days. Try it... you may see results you like without saying you're on a "diet".
