I'm sick because people come to work sick. Why?

I have some awful respiratory infection that comes with a hacking cough, running nose, and extreme fatigue. Some co-workers have been calling in sick and I find out they have had this illness. Other co-workers are coming to work sick and the illness continues to spread. Why do people come to work when they are so ill and so contagious? Don't they know that everyone else will become ill; we'll be short staffed; then all the elderly we care for will become ill and some can die from illness. Why do people do this? Why can't they just stay home when they are ill? Are they too proud to admit they are ill? They don't need money that bad because when they get paid and drink too much they call in!

Think of this people when they get sick they can't always afford to miss work like someone people. Either they don't make enough to support themselves and there family if they miss a few days of work and with what you have it's contagious up to 10 days that is a lot of missed days of work and lot of. Weather they go to work or not most all things are contagious before you have any signs of being sick so there for the people you are around have already been infected weather they are old or young. That is what your immune system is build for to protect you so when you do get sick your not that bad but some sickness like what you have it don't matter because it changes from person to person so it really want matter if your home or not. My husband and I have had a respiratory infect for 2 weeks. I had it first then my daughter and son had it then it came back to me and then to my husband. See it don't matter and my kids are even in school yet and they where around there cousins and they didn't get sick. My husband can't stop going to work because he is sick he only makes $8 hour and is part time because they can't make him full time just yet. Even full time he isn't garintied better paid. He almost never misses work if he is sick or not unless he has to like dr visits for our kids.

YOu need medication doesn't mean they didn't go different people have different doctors and different doctors have different hours and different medication does different things to there body. Some people get sick and can't afford medication it's not cheap and neither is going to the doctor cheap.

And that is my point. There are a lot of people who have health insurance and they can afford to go to the doctor and can even afford to stay home and miss some days of work. I do not have health insurance and I had to pay over $100 for a visit to the clinic. I had to return to the clinic and pay another $100 because I did not get any better. The medication for the first visit was another $100. I didn't have to buy one of the $50 ones because my daughter had the same inhaler and she gave me one of hers. The second visit, the inhaler that the doctor prescribed was over $150 and the antibiotic was at least $30. I did not have the money for the $150 inhaler, so I had to go without purchasing it. So altogether, the doctor visits and the prescriptions have cost me over $300 and I had to miss up to four days of work. All because someone came to work sick and I caught it!!

I understand that! I have been ill for two weeks now and have spent a lot of money going to the physician and buying medications. What I caught from someone has cost me a lot of time off work and money. Maybe they were healthier and could recover without going to the physician and buying medications, but I could not. And on top of that I have missed several days of work. I hope I know that I am sick before exposing other people and try to stay home.

I'm sorry to hear that you got sick because of your co-workers. I don't think you have to be so mad at them though. If I were them, I wouldn't be absent as well just because I had a cough or I had a fever. I'd rather take medicines and then wear a mask to prevent my illness from spreading. The thing is when one person is absent in the office a lot of jobs are not done and finished and this makes things worse. What they could have done is to avoid spreading the virus. At least try to avoid people while they are currently contagious or if they can't like what I said, wear a mask.

If people would use protective gear it would be great. My problem is that I thought I had allergies and then it seems that is not the case. So I probably made several people ill because I went to work thinking I was not contagious either. I'm staying home now though even though I don't have a fever, this stuff is obviously very contagious!

You know I am much better. I have been off work for the past two days becoming healthier! I think that finally I am feeling better and am excited because I actually feel like typing and participating in discussion on mylot again. That is really sick when one doesn't even feel like checking in on mylot and being involved in discussions! Alas, I return to work tomorrow and I plan to get plenty of rest in the evenings until after the weekend. After that I should be fully recovered and not get reinfected.

From what the doctor and nurses told us at the nursing home, you are not contagious unless you have a fever. One winter I was getting sick all the time, but rarely ran the high fever to match. If I stayed home every time my nose ran I'd have been out of a job. I did wear a surgical mask so as not to spread germs but one day a supervisor told me not to wear it anymore because it "frightens the patients".

I, too, work in the nursing home. The Director of Nurses was also sick and she thought it was something viral which means antibiotics won't help. I don't know what the stuff is, but it is wicked! I cough and cough and cough and barely catch my breath!

It is very interesting to me how people can call in for a broken finger nail, so it seems, and then come to work with pneumonia! In a home for the elderly such as your place of employment it is so important that they stay home when they are contagious. Sometimes though we do think that we will feel better as we get up about during the day only to realize that we are not going to get better at all. do you require a doctor's statement for a sick day? maybe they can't afford a doctor's appointment and a day off too...

We do require doctor's note when ill or come to work and tell the nurse that you are ill and they will assess and send you home. If you come in and the nurse sends you home there is no penalty. If you call in sick you must have a note or stay out of work for three days. This is so that people will not just wake up and decide to say they are ill and not come to work.

I also wonder about that, but I also do that sometimes. It's called commitment and responsibility. You don't want to miss out on your responsibilities, so sick or well, you report to work. Also, people get salary deductions when they are absent.

I work in a nursing home with the frail and elderly. When we bring disease and illness in to them, it can cost them their lives! It is not just an inconvenience about missing a few days pay. I didn't realize that I was as ill as I was either, until I thought I was well then became worse. Ugh, I don't want to miss pay, but I don't want anyone else to become ill. It has to stop with someone!

Best of luck to you. I became ill a week ago Friday and my friend became ill last Tuesday. Neither one of us is any better. I felt great Friday and after going to the market on Saturday, became very ill again. I'm finally going to the doctor today!

I don't know why people are so inconsiderate. Most people I know go to work sick because they can't afford to lose the time but you say it's not the case where you work. You're not alone. The problem is widespread here, apparently, because on the radio they've spent some time at least once a day to tell people precautionary methods if they do have to go to work when they are sick. It is advice on how to go to work and not sicken other people. One thing they say is to cough or sneeze on your sleeve instead of in your hand or a tissue. What the heck?! So now you have those germs all over your sleeve all day (or until exposure kills them) instead of in a tissue you can throw away or a hand you can sanitize. I just don't understand the advice doctors give these days. Anyway, you're not alone. I hope you feel better soon!

I've now been told that influenza A is what people who are sick are testing positive for. I don't know what I have, but I guess I can go to the doctor finally to find out. I don't seem to be getting any better! I won't go to work because I don't want anyone else to catch what I have! A physician's note will be better for me to not be disciplined for missing work too.

First of all, feel sorry for you and get well soon. These running nose, cough and what all symptoms you mentioned are contagious and can easily spread from one person to other if proper remediation is not taken. Most of the people who are affected with these things does not take much care as these are common symptoms. And moreover they don't want to take leave so that their salary will be reduced for corresponding days. I know how much it is irritating when affected with these diseases. Therefore if someone is coming to office with these infections ask them to use some protective measures like covering their mouth etc.

I can't go to the office now because I'm way too sick and this is the 10th day now that I've been ill. I can't afford to lose pay either, but I don't want anyone to get what I have because it is awful! Fortunately for me four of the days I've been ill are on the weekend and I don't lose pay on those four days!

It's a really horrible situation. I can understand both sides. I would be really angry if someone passed a disease on to me, when they could have had the chance to stay at home. But in this economical situation, sometimes you just can't allow yourself to go home and have a rest, because you're going to lose a lot of money, and some people would really need that little that they can earn if they go to work sick. And some people might even see their symptoms as a "simple cold", maybe unconsciously they wanna persuade themselves of that it's not that bad. I tzhink the solution would be to help those who are sick, so they won't feel that they would lose a lot of money they would be eager to earn, if they stay at home with an illness.

I wish our company had paid days for sick leave. I think that way fewer people would report to work ill and make the rest of us ill. I know that some will abuse these days, but overall, I think people for the most part would just use the days when they are ill. I probably wouldn't have become ill if that were the case, because I rarely go anywhere but to work and home and occasionally to the market.
