Hello guys! I feel lucky this evening. Just a while ago, I got myself enrolled for a medical transcriptionist training. Since today is our first training day, our typing speed were assessed. Turns out my writing hobby and time here in mylot paid off! The years I spent participating in writing forums enabled me to learn how to write, earn and increase my skills in typing. My net typing speed is 65. I just got lucky LOL, my usual speed is around 50 above. I know that in the online writing world this is average but people who don't often type only get lower than 40. We are required to have at least 40 wpm typing speed. So I guess I don't have to worry about that. My accuracy is above 90 but I want to reach the 100 percent as much as possible to make me more eligible for this kind of work. Now, this may seem like I am bragging but what I am trying to say is that little things like joining forums online and writing only may be little stepping stones that may be able to give us advantage by using our learned skills in the future. I know one of our members here was very fortunate to have gotten a real writing job, and this person practiced through online writing! To my fellow writers, let us do our best!

Hi! Congratulations Aja for coming out with flying colours. It is correct that writing on various forums and on mylot gives us a very good practice and speed automatically improves when you keep posting. You have a pretty good speed of 65 w.p.m. and the high speed will surely pay you rewards in the coming days. All the best.

Thank you deepak! I have spent years joining forums. Not only did it help me improve my communication skills using the English language, it also helped me develop a faster typing speed. I couldn't have done it without the forums I have joined in the past. Being an internet junkie pays off, I will practice in order to reach and maintain my typing speed above 60. I think this is satisfactory enough for the job. Still I want to do faster than that.

It is evident from your posts that your continued participation in different fora helped you improve your English and writing skills. You appear to be very ambitious (and it is a positive trait) when you state that you want to be faster. All the best.

Haha, yeah I am the lazy but strangely ambitious type. I just hope I can get over my laziness. It's a big drawback for me. Thanks deepak!

That is really wonderful that your being online has enabled you to learn to type faster and with better accuracy. When I was in high school we had to take keyboarding classes or whatever it was called. We had to learn a certain way to type using home row. I already was so fast typing from being on the computer all the time when I was young that I could do over 85 words per minute with pretty good accuracy. The teacher was mad I wouldnt use her method of home row and mad that I could type faster then her lol.

Wow, I think your typing skills are off the scale! Awesome! I can only think you have reached a higher typing skill than that now that you are older. A high schooler with a typing speed like that is rare, i think. But I don't know, maybe in your country, kids use the computer a lot? Haha, when we type the way we want to I think we can type faster. By the way... home row typing? Never heard of that, is that the kind of typing where you don't look at the keyboard and use all your fingers to type certain keys?

I have been here for several years and my typing has not improved one iota!.. I try to touch type using all fingers and I have even at times done exercises but I cannot look at the screen while I tap away with 2 fingers. I'm really disappointed by this.

It takes years and practice to increase ones typing speed. It's important to consistently practice without looking at the keyboard. I began to learn touch typing out of boredom and also because I get a headache every time I switch looking at the keyboard and then the monitor and then back, makes me dizzy. Another thing to increase speed is simply relax, breathe evenly and not force ourselves to type fast because that will make us commit more mistakes. I've read this information from the site that taught me how to touch type. Let me see... the site that I used is http://www.typeonline.co.uk/typingspeed.php

What do you mean only average in the online world? Either you can type at the speed on a keyboard or you can't.

Well, I found some information online that 65wpm is average. But in some others, it says the average is 30-40wpm. It is confusing. Besides, I don't really think it is important to type fast. what's important is accuracy and we get our work done.

We have the same net speed! My teacher and classmates were in awe of it but I know 65 is only average in the online world. So, I don't want to be cocky about it.

Learning how to touch type helps increase typing speed. It's when one doesn't need to look at the keyboard any longer which saves a lot of time. It is effective and efficient. I notice many typist are fast but have low typing accuracy. I'm trying to learn to increase both. Thank you for responding. Let's practice typing!

Good typing speed, keep it up and continue to speed your typing speed. There was a time when my typing speed was 45 words per minute, but now it is 35. I didn't continued to keep up with typing speed. You must continue or else it'll become once upon a time our typing speed was...

I see. So it slows down if you are out of practice. I use the computer everyday, so I guess it will help me improve.

The good thing about speed is that it helps us finish our written works faster. But if we are not on that field of job, speed is not that important.

Thank you krisha. Back in the day, I was also a 40 wpm typist. When I learned how to touch type(got the inclination because I was bored and I wanted to be a writer) my speed increased a bit. I'm sure anyone can do it with practice!
