Considering vet bills

I can't believe the number of people who get animals and don't consider the vet bills, nor the overall cost. It does add up, I just took Gizmoe tot he vet (a 2.6 pound guinea pig), ended up costing $101.38 and it wasn;t anything deadly - now imagine if he had to have a procedure, or had cancer. Maybe, because my cats have been sick since the day I have brought them home, and Patches is almost every few months, I fork out about $3,000 in vet bills (not including the $2,000 in annual checkups and shots). So I tend to put money aside, or these sudden visits costs don't shock me. I go pay it on my credit card, and cut back a lot of things to pay it off. Now people like my sister who just paid $206 at the vet, and she has been complaining for a week now. I told her suck it up you got the animal, you should realize these costs. She has to bring the cat back next week for a checkup, and some shot (for the infection), if the infeciton is left the cat will die. She whining about it, and I know my parents will end up paying for it like last week. I hear it at work all the time how customers didn't think having a cat, or a dog would cost this much,a nd they should just get ride of it. I just stand there going you people are so stupid, and it's obvious. If you can't afford the vet bills or don't want to put money into your animals then don't get them.

i found this quite ironic but it's a money saver. At the clinic I take my cats to, I bought insurance for them. It only costs me $18.50 a month! Very cheap! Every time I take my cat to the clinic they give me a statement about how much money I've saved and last year I saved over $700 dollars! Maybe you should look into that. I take my pets to the vet in Petsmart. It's a life saver! :) Happy MyLotting!

I wish we had that here, we do have insurance but it costs a few hundred a month, and it doesn;t cover a lot, so you would still be throwing money to the clinic, plus the insurance company. I put about $200 a month away for their checkup and emergencies.

I agree with pets can be very expensive and people should consider that before getting a pet. We had two dogs until recently, one had to be put down due to bone cancer. It was heart breaking. We had him 13 yrs. But the treatments and the vet visits weren't doing anything to help him. It ended up being very expensive for the treaments and the pain shots they gave him. Its definely something that should be consider for you get a pet.

Very true, it can be very expensive. I know many who simple treatment as antibiotics tehy wont pay for either put the animal down or give it away. I put so much away each month in an emergency and they need vet care.

I completely agree with you, wyen we bring a pet into our family they become a member of our family and as such, they should be cared for in the same ways that we care for the human members of our family. We set back money in case of our own medical issues therefore, we should also set back money in case of the medical issues of our pets. The best comparison that I can make is that we would not opt to bring another child into our family if we were not able to support them, likewise we should not bring a pet into our family if we are not able to support them. This means that they should have food to eat and their medical needs have to be met as well.

Very true. I had to bring my cat to the vet the week of Christmas cause of her bad reaction to her flea medicine. I woke up on Christmas Day and saw she had a big patch of hair missing and a red spot there, oblong in shape. It was like panic-time. I called the vet the next day and got her in the same day. He gave her two shots, combed out her hair alittle and I showed him the skin problems she had been having and told him I just bought and used 2 kinds of flea remedies. He gave me some antibiotics and told me to give her a teasp. of corn oil (!!??) up to 3 times per day for the rest of her life, and then get some Omega 3 oil and perhaps some other cat vitamins. It ended up costing me $183. but as I hadn't brought her there in a long time I paid it and didn't whine. She is slowly getting better. She stil has the skin irritant on the side but alot of it has healed, just worried how slow it is completely healing though. I think it's cause no one here agrees I should put a Elizabethan collar on her so I can put some Neosporin on it so she won't lick it. If I was here alone I would do that and monitor her and make sure she doesn't hurt herself with the collar on, to. By the way I don't understand why he recommended corn oil for her skin, isn't that bad for cats? I haven't given her much of it cause I don't agree with it. Anways when I was at the vet there I overheard the ladies at the desk talking. They had this client who brought her cat in and then after finding out her bill qould be like $900. she told them she didn't have any money and she she found the cat on the street and wasn't hers. They did a check on it all and found out she brought the same cat to another place right before there and so I guess that proves to them she does own the cat or owned it until the bill was presented to her. They then said they would still send her the bill but I imagine she left the cat there with them and never picked it up. I don't know what medical procedures, etc it needed though, they didn't say. Then when I was coming out of the room with my cat after the vet examined her, a young guy was there with a little girl and a feral cat he had in a carrier. He was arguing alittle with the lady at the desk about not wanting to pay any extra for this or that when she was trying to explain to him that the cost of $75 would be for anesthesia so they can examine the cat's leg (he said he dropped the cat or something and he was limping on it or something to that effect--) plus get the cat fixed too. He kept saying he didn't care if the cat was fixed, it's a feral cat, and that he would just leave the cat on the street, blah, blah, blah. OMG, it was like the twilight zone. I know I hadn't brought my cat in for awhile but this was something I have never witnessed as much as before other times there. Sad. I do hope this young guy did the right thing on all counts, that is all I can hope for and being the cat was feral I hope he is OK outside too after all of this. It just breaks my heart people want to abandon animals after they find out the costs.
