So, one of our dear Mylot friends just told us on Gather that she is going to make a quilt for her son's wedding, if she can finish it in time.
This got me thinking.. I never received such a gift. I don't have any quilts or knitted blankets from any of my family members. Most of my family is passed now.. and most of them weren't into making things like that anyway.. except my mother. My mother crochets, and perhaps I owned a few things she made when I was a child.. like hats and gloves.. but no blankets or other momentos that I have now.
I think it would be nice if I did. I think memories like that mean so much more to us, especially after the person isn't with us anymore.
I have other momentos of my deceased relatives. Memories of course, pictures, and perhaps a few other practical items. The chair I'm sitting in right now used to belong to my foster mom.. but unfortunately it will soon be replaced as it has gotten old and uncomfortable. I still have a duffle bag that belonged to my Godfather who died in 92. We don't use it for much anymore.. but I still have it.
Do you have any momentos from your deceased relatives? Any handmade momentos or just "things" you may have acquired after their passing?

My family is not well off. So there wouldn't be any 'things' that they could bequeath when they pass.
But that would be a neat idea!
I'm trying to save a few dollars so I'd have something to leave my kids when I kick the bucket, but it would be neat if there was a memento that I could pass on to.
Now you got me thinking what it could be...

My FIL passed just after Christmas last year. Shortly before Christmas the kids all took a day off from school to visit him in the hospital for the last time. He had my sister in law go pick out gifts for him to give them, something they could keep forever to remember him by. She went to Things Remembered and got them each something engraved. They each got a small tin that was engraved from grandpa, as well as something in the tin. 3 of the boys got a little crystal figure, the oldest and my daughter got a necklace.
Sadly the kids haven't taken great care of these things, especially the younger ones. But the older ones still have theirs and will always have this memento.

I was mentioning to a friend on Gather, just now, that I have crocheted afghans my dad's mom made while my dad's dad was in the hospital. She even crocheted edging on a fleece blanket for my babies. I made some things when my children were babies, and have started a lot of things now that the kids are adults.I made items for my grandchildren this year. I crocheted little bags, they are from a pattern called a "soap saver" but no one uses bar soap. I made one for a client who does use bar soap,, and then three for my daughter's children and two for my son's future step children. I am making an afghan--supposed to be a granny a day, but I will try to make about twelve a week to have it finished. I have a crocheted lace tablecloth my mom's mom made, and I loaned it to a friend for her wedding. I have two Irish crochet table toppers made by my first mother in law. I have a quilt top to complete from my mom, Lots of odds and ends. I would look into getting your chair rebuilt and reupholstered if it has good memories. Chairs made so long ago are often better quality than those made today. I have a chair to have redone for my daughter, two for my son and two for myself, I just need to find an upholsterer who will do it, since I purchased the fabric for these projects online. The memories are more important than any material thing, however.

It's just an average office chair.. nothing special about it to make it worth trying to save.. other than the fact that it used to belong to my foster mom which is why I haven't bothered replacing it yet.

I have a few odds and ends that belong to my one grandmother. My other grandmother used to make quilts and I have at least one of those still. I think making a quilt is a great way to pass down something through your family. I've thought about learning to crochet. It seems to be a big thing to do lately. It seems like a few of people I know are learning to do it and making hats for their kids and for friends.

I have pillow cases my aunt embrodered designes on...I even have a coffee pot that was my grandmothers...it is ceramic....and that is just the tip of the iceberg. Alot I have passed on to my daughters.....my youngest is going to pick up her dishes that were my grandmothers too....next time she comes that is.

I saw that post too, who are you on Gather? I have a few items that were made for me but most of them have worn out over the years. I would love to learn how to make a quilt. My mother's family all crochetted.

I was thinking about this just last night. One of the best handmade things that I have is a two-toned blue checked afghan that my maternal grandmother (Mormor as we say in Danish) made for me. I love it! It's navy blue and power blue checkers, and I've had it since I was a little girl. To this day I love those two shades of blue together, because of it.

Neither my boyfriend nor I have much in the way of mementos from relatives. In his case, his mother gave his brother pretty much everything--including just about every photo and every bit of Judaica--while he was out of the country for a few years and sold off all of her remaining jewelry when the dementia was setting in.

We have lots of photographs that go back to the mid 1800@s and family letters etc as well as birth cerificates. I have a beautiful antique mahogony dressing table and two other pieces - china closet and what-not that belonged to my husband's grandmother at the turn of the century. We had them revarnished and I just love them. I have antique plates that my sister Gill gave me and also a framed piece of embroidery that she did on my 5th wedding anniversary - so that's 38 years old! My daughted will get this. Some pieces of jewellery from my sister too. I cannot think of anything else at present.
