Kite almost killed our friend

Yes a kite flying in the sky almost killed him. Kite flying on the occasion of Makar Sankranti festival is common; this festival falls on 14th of January every year. But kite flying begins few days earlier and continues for few days later. There are kite flying competitions, special threads that are coated with glass-powder mixed with gum are used to fly the kites; one tries to cut another’s kite using these threads. The threads can act as sharp knives if rubbed on one’s neck. A friend of hubby was moving on the street on his bike; thread of a falling kite came on way, it touched his neck; as he was driving; the thread cut his neck almost, he somehow stopped and thus saved. Do you/ your kids fly kites on any occasion? Any competition like that at your place? Please comments on this story please. Thanks in advance. January 15 2013.

an ordinary string can cut skin. I used to fly kite when I was younger, and until now I have a scar on my finger (right pointer) caused by the friction of the string from a kite. WE flew kite for fun not for competition so we used ordinary string. and that really cuts skin. yes, good thing your friend stopped and avoided the string. Good for him it is not his time yet.

Hello Kalyni I had never flew a kite. I never had the ability. But my children with my husband did. They enjoyed it too much. There`s a kite contest in Manizales, Colombia. We have no contest here. I`m happy your friend is fine! Blessings Kalyni... Dainy

Kite flying is not something that we are really able to do on a regular basis around here because of the fact that we have a lot of trees in our area so there really isn't a place that you can safely fly kites. However, in the spring there are two different parks in our area that host kite festivals. We enjoy visiting these festivals to look at all of the kites that are being flown, but we don't typically take a kite with us to fly.

Unfortunately, my kids have never experience kite flying. We live in the city and there is not that much place to go to fly a kite unless we go to a park which is quite far from our home. But now that you have mentioned it, I will try to encourage them to experience playing the kite. My brother and I have played with a kite when we were kids. The kids now has a very different way of playing. barely any interaction at all. And if there was, they would just be sitting on their chair or on the floor and let their fingers do all the work.

Earlier in our city we used to have kite flying competitions at designated places (big grounds). But now a days such big grounds (unoccupied) are hard to find in big cities. People prefer to fly kites from their own houses. Hence these affect the moving people in that locality. I just read in the local news paper that at least 50 persons were injured on 15th due to threads of kites. Many of them serious and even fatal. Although we have every right to celebrate our festivals in traditional ways and pass on the tradition to our younger ones, this should not be at the cost of human lives. I do agree that such incidents have been occurring since years, but in my opinion, the introduction of Nylon threads for flying kites has enhanced the intensity of injury. Nylon threads are banned, however, I have seen plenty of brands available in the market. I would urge people to refrain from using Nylon threads for kite flying, which are detrimental to human lives.

I know people who are in kite flying clubs, but we do not have any holiday or contest around here like you describe. I heard on the news that some people put crushed glass or metal on their kite strings so they can cut the strings of other people's kites. Kites are beautiful when they are flying.

Children always playing kite here on summer in the field near my house. I see some kites competition but not in my neighbourhood, they have a realy-really big kites and need more than 2 man to fly them. Kids in my neighbourhood also use glass powder to coat the thread to make it as sharp as knives. Once a little boy almost lost one of his feet finger because he get caught by kite strings while he was playing with his friend.

Hi friend ! I just want to ask what is that festival all about , is it about flying of kites ? What is the essence of that festival ? I know your country is so rich in culture and tradition. I want to say also accident , comes like a thief in the night , one is unaware that it will strike. So when it comes , one must not panic but keep relax , so one can think the right thing to do. Thanks God your friend is safe ! I love looking at kites , the color and the different styles but we have it our country during summer only. Is it summer there ? Have a peaceful Evening.

Hi Kalyni, It was too dangerous! Fortunately, there was nothing wrong with him. Your description reminds me of the movie which called The Kite Runner. The kite flying competition is held every Spring. I have never seen it in person, but I did watched the scene from the film. It seems exciting and challenging. They fight for flying. But the passers-by should be careful when is near there. The speed of the kite flies amazingly fast and when someone is scratched by the thread carelessly, it must be very painful. Have a nice day.
