Cat took a bath... It will rain. Is it a myth?

It is raining cats and dogs today, while looking at the window. I suddenly remembered my lovely grandma; the cat should not take the plunge of getting wet. If they do, it will rain. There is no way that it will become seasonal to rain just because the cat takes a bath.

I am wondering how come there comes the saying--it rains cats and dogs, when we describe a heavy rain. It is interesting about this saying though I have never figured it out why it is said so. By the way, I have never seen a cat taking a bath. What will happen if a cat takes a bath is a myth to me. Thanks for the discussion, Shavkat.

Hello William. I'll bet that you have seen a cat take a bath. They don't get into water on their own as we do. They take a bath when they lick themselves. Their tongues are like sandpaper to clean not only their hair but also their skin.

I agree with you Deebomb , cats don't take a bath , they clean themselves . I have seen my cat cleaning herself but i don't rely in her way of cleaning herself because sometimes she slept beside me. So , i gave her a bath , though sometimes she feels cold , i held her tight then shampoo all over her body. I did this once in a month. For me no truth in that myth but nothing also would be lost if we believed in that hearsay.

My neighbors owns two white cats and he would give them bathe often. I don't know if it has anything to do with the weather.

There is a western saying that when a cat is bathing it is going to rain. There is a certain amount of truth to it, because the ions in the air change, sometimes enough that even people's hair will get static-ie or flyaway. Imagine how that would feel if your entire body is made up of tiny sensitive feeler hairs? Wouldn't you try to get them to settle down? Now, I know there is a country that thinks that getting a cat wet will bring the rain, but I can't say that's a fact, at least the cat is only getting wet and not killed!

Raining cats and dogs. What silliness. I think that myths or whatever are fun but just that. Not something to really take too terribly serious.

I don't get it. Maybe because cats are so apposed to water.

I don't know how the idiomatic expression derived from. Thinking that if the animals will take a bath and get wet, it will rain.

I think there are so many myths around the world but non of them can be true. If it was like that, then whenever somebody needed rain, he/she will wash their cat and it will rain, so easy.. haha It is believed here in India that if a cat crosses your path, then it is a bad omen.

It is also same myth for us, if the black cat is in your path; bad omen will come.

Hello Shavkat. If it a cat taking a bath caused it to rain then we would never get any rain, because cats do not get into water on their own. They only get into water when a person puts them in it. The expression "raining cats and dogs came from the time when the roofs of homes was covered with thatch which is the straw from wheat and other grains. The became a home for mice and or rats. The cats and dogs would crawl into that space to catch and eat those mice and rats. When it rained those animals would fall from that roofing.

I haven't heard that, I guess it explains the idiomatic expression.

I believe that raining like cats and dogs has no relationship with having a bath for the cat. This is just a coincidence. If it is true, then the people who suffer from the drought should have the bath for the cat so that the rains will come. I wish it could control the weather so easily in this way.

I agree my friend, if that is true. Then the cats should need to take a bath and reinforce the farmers.

Myth, I haven't encountered that one. I have taken care of cats and I even bathe them, and there is no rain to be seen. Sometimes these superstitions are way over beyond the explanation. I don't even know where they got them in the first place.

I've never heard of a myth involving a cat taking a bath. However, and yes I do realize that this is a myth as well, I have noticed that when ever I take the time to wash my car, it will almost always rain the day after I've washed my car. I just think that there are some things that seem to always happen after you've done something and you will start to get superstitious about something or another. All of this said, I have to say that I really don't believe in superstitions.

Huh? That is a weird myth. What I know is that cat does not need to take a bath because they are already clean. Though it still depends on owner if they want to take a bath their pet cat or not.

Well, this is the first time I've heard of such saying. In fact, I knew that most cats are afraid of water. Unless of course if the owner used to bath them and so that the cat will be used to it. I seldom see one who would plunge into the water just to get wet.And if ever it is very seldom or they have a purpose for doing that. I don't believe in this myth.

hi, most of the elders said that when can took a bath it will rain but i think its not true because i have a friend who always take her cat to bath every thrice a week and the weather still sunny and hot,so that belief is really true at all.

Well, in my part, I have absolutely never heard of this myth inherent in the fact that if a cat gets wet, then it means that it will rain! There are many rumors, however, in Italy (especially in the south, in the city of Naples), where luck, superstitions, etc., are the masters. I personally live mostly in skepticism.

Hi Shavkat, I have been using "rains cats and dogs" to describe heavy rain. It would be really interesting to read myths related to it. Nowadays cats have become adorable pets to us. Other than taking good care of them, to get them dressed up lovely. Cats owner would bathe them regularly to keep them clean and healthy and decent Like some of my colleagues does. it won't rain during dry season even the cats taking bath. Happy posting

It is only in the Philippines, other countries they took they cat into shower. It means it's a myth and superstitious belief that given to us by our forefathers. Some of the cat here in our place are taking a bath also by their owners and they didn't believe about the myth

Yes, I also know that myth and perhaps somewhat superstitious. I never got the chance to prove that it is true though I am also curious if it is true. I think it is just one of the superstitious belief during old days and its up to us if we will do the experiment. Experiment of making the cat wet and see if it will rain. lol

Once a month, I bathe my cats then. I usually did that for the purpose of cleaning them, and obviously I am contradicting the myth.

MYTH.....cats gets worst publicity when it comes to myths and legends for being a domestic animal.History centers on the phenomenom that when cat gets wet or took bath..it will rain, not to mention the superstition of black cat crossing your path,Of course its not true.First of all pets must be clean and free from fleas for it can be transferred to human especially children and may cause deseases spicifically skin deseases.
