The auto rickshaw driver cheated

Last Sunday, was off day for my son and holiday for my grandkids here, so we planned to visit a famous park here; 16 kilometers away, my son hired a Taxi cab for the onward journey only because time of return was not certain. We always hire a Taxi cab through registered services; there is no chance of getting cheated. After our stay of 2 hours there, my son called the cab services; the answer was, ‘no Sir, it is 8pm, you are in a disturbed area in the city; we can’t send taxi there’. So he hired two auto-rickshaws. Normally they say I will take 10 rupees extra over the meter reading; but this man didn’t tell anything. As soon as the fare-distance-meter is made on, the fare shown is 16 rupees, this is normal here. The rickshaw I set with hubby and granddaughters kept driving through different roads; lanes; I was sure he was not taking us in right route; I told him this but he said ‘other roads are closed’. When we reached son’s home, it was 10.30pm, the meter showed 235 rupees as fare and distance 26.2 kilometers. He told to pay 250.00 rupees. In the meantime my son who travelled by the other auto had reached home, he had paid 150 rupees only. So he interfered, threatened him to call police; he agreed that the meter was tampered and my son paid 150 rupees only. This was a sad experience; though I know some drivers are cheats. Any such experience; did you ever get cheated by taxi-cab, auto rickshaw or manual rickshaw drivers? Do they charge based upon meter readings or you bargain the fare? Please comments on this please. Thanks in advance. Cheers have a lucky day ahead. January 23. 2013.

We have lots of that in our place. Taxicab drivers won't give us the change. So what we are doing is to have lots of coins and smaller bills in order that we could only pay the exact fare.

They never return the change, always need tips too, over the fare.

no difference in the Philippine but to be fair not all are like that, a few rotten eggs spoils the image of everybody especially to international tourists, these people will never prosper cause they feed their family what they stole from honest people

Hello mam yes i had this experience in Hyderabad as well. But we didn't pay the money what the driver demanded. As my friend knows how much will be the actual cost she paid only that much. These days auto cheaters are more and we should be cautious.

Kalyani mam, sad to hear about this, anyway your son threatened him and paid the correct rate. This kind of cheating auto drivers are quite common in our country, we must be very careful with them to avoid unwanted issues

Hi Kalyni, I am sorry to hear that. It happens in China as well. I once went on business to another city in China. It was the first time I went there. When I got there and I called a taxi. When the taxi came, I found that there was not the fare meter in that taxi. But I didn't have the choices. I negotiated with the taxi driver how much from the airport to the hotel I would live in. He said 70 RMB and I didn't have the idea about the distance. And I said thank you to him when I arrived there! But finally when I talked to my friend who is in that city. She said I was cheated by the driver. It was just about 10 min by taxi and he must detour! I may pay more than 40 RMB on it. I know he bullyed me as a stranger. And I know most of the driver are good to obey the rules, but I was a little disappointed with him. I hope your mood doesn't badly affected by him. Leave it behind and I think he is just an exception.

I agree all are not, but those who cheat create a bad impression for all.

In my country taxi driver who cheat aren't a big problem. Some of them might choose a longer route than the direct route in order to earn more, but generally we can trust them and we can trust the taximeters. In other countries I have been cheated for instance in Eastern Europe and in Asia. In Romania we wanted to take a taxi from the train station to our hotel. We always negotiate a price before we enter the taxi if there is no taximeter and the taxi driver told us that he wanted 50 lei. We didn't know the normal prices, but we thought that 50 lei sounded like a lot and we negotiated for while and we finally agreed on 20 lei. Later on we discovered that the normal price was 5 lei! In Asia I have also met tuk-tuk drivers and taxi drivers who cheated. I thought Bangkok was especially bad. We did meet honest tuk-tuk drivers in Bangkok, but many of them tried to cheat. They lied and didn't stick to the price that we had agreed on before we started. Some of the taxis had tampered taximeters.
