sleeping on the job

The E-Games Station of our company is now operating on 24 hours. One employee who was referred by our boss, was cited as sleeping on the job. To validate , HR reviewed the CCTV, and saw that indeed the said employee slept from 3 am to 5 am. He slept on the couch so fitfully fully stretched, while othe clients played. At another time , he was also seen on CCTV when he went out at 3am and was back at 7am. When he was called on the matter, he honestly said he isn't used to the graveyard shift, and couldn't control his sleepiness. He also said that when he went out from 3am to 7 am, he slept in his car! Thus, he was told to just resign and so he did. But our boss had a second thought and gave him a second chance, because he is supposed to be her "eye" to the other employees, who also slept on the job and do some other violations as he has revealed. He promised not to do it anymore, so he retracted his resignation, and we gave him a second chance. Meanwhile, the time that he slept will be deducted from his salary. What's your thoughts on this guys?

Well everyone deserves a second chance since he's also been honest but he could have at least tried drinking coffee or energy drinks to keep him awake or talk with other employees. I've been working night shifts before and it's hard but I managed to keep myself awake by talking with my friends and finding things or talks to laugh about.

Yes, everyone deserves a second chance indeed. Since he was honest about it and we understand the difficulty of being in a night shift , so management would like to give him another chance. So, do you keep on drinking coffee too, during the night shift?

They do have a one hour break during the night shift. But i guess when you sleep during that time, it's difficult to cut the sleeping process, when the one hour is up. Did the coffee, helped you stay awake, verna?

Yup, I've been drinking strong coffee without sugar specially after 3-5 night shifts. That's the period when my body is getting tired for irregular sleeping.

oh what is that E-games station for? lol can i work in that? hhehe! Well it is ok to give second chances as long as he will make sure he won't do it again and will change.. plus it is fair as the time he slept was deducted.

It is actually a tie up with PAGCOR'e E- Gaming and also another store is the E- Bingo, jazel. Sure, we are in need of cashiers. I think we are fair enough in giving him another chance, because he revealed that others are also doing it. Now, that's another investigation by HR. I think, they should have a scheduled napping time of at least 30 minutes.

Sounds like he needs to figure out a sleeping pattern that works for him so he's not sleeping on the job. I hope it works out for him the 2nd time around!

When I first got here, my first job was on the graveyard shift. It was really difficult for me, as I also couldn't sleep during the day because it was really hot (summer), and I had to take care of my son who was then just 2 years old. So, I would also 'sleep on the job'. But I would make sure that nobody would see me. I would go to the manager's washroom and lock the door there. I would sleep for half an hour, and then go back to work. Thankfully I don't work those hours anymore.

Wow, what a way to get some sleep being on duty bounce. Well, at least no one sees you sleeping there, because CCTvs are just within the work areas.

Well, we gave him a chance but we have to demote him because his former position should have been supervisory. But he chose to resign. He is an arrogant man.

i have worked in the call center set up as well and i know every hour, actually every minute is so important in that kind of job, especially if you are an agent and will have to be on the phone. People who are unlucky to be on the night shift would often have to have reversed sleeping time and often it takes time for them to be used to the kind of working hours they have. When i was in the industry before we too were able to tell who are not yet logged in, and who is missing and who has not returned from their lunch or 15 minute breaks. Their team leaders would have to find them where they are - and yes sometimes most of them have had extended naps (their alarms not going off) ha ha h well i think if HR does come in to handle the case, most of them would be given a written reprimand and yest that is true, their number of minutes late are often deducted from salary. They are only asked to resign if they are intentionally forgetting to log back in, or if they have totally abandoned their jobs. these no. of minutes actually reset per month, so that is just the way most of them survives in such a work environment.

Now that you have narrated that, the more that we agree that he deserves a second chance indeed. He also said that others are sleeping too, not only him. HR will review the CCTV so memos to the concerned employees be given.

When working in night shifts, the biggest health hazard in the long run is not sleeping for a few hours in the night. Going by that (I have seen many call center guys and gals suffer due to this), I would recommend that you should split the timings and hire another person such that the 8-hour night shift gets divided between the two and comes down to 4 hours for each and ensure that the two get to sleep at least the other 4 hours. The two employees can be asked to continue and deliver the remaining 4 hours any other time during the day. That way, they would remain healthy, and also not sleep during their working hours. And you would set an example of great management too.

Actually sids, we have 3 shifts, 8 hour each. We know that it would be detrimental to health so we made it into 3 shifts. Then, each week their shift changes, so everybody will have a fair share. So far, nobody complained about the night shift yet. I think, by now they have already adjusted.

What is good is that he was so honest in admitting that he did it twice. They have 3 shifts actually, 8 hours each. So if they are assigned on the graveyard shift, which they will all surely will, because their shift changes weekly, it would be indeed difficult to adjust your sleeping pattern. That's why we would like to give him another chance.

If he really needed the job, he should have made efforts in controlling his sleep. I mean, he knew he will be placed on a graveyard shift, and he should be responsible. Well, giving him another chance is fine. But one sign of his being irresponsible on his job again, should mean firing him.

We told him that. In fact, we were bent in firing him, but just gave him another chance.

How could he be an eye to the company if he himself is irresponsible. But giving him a chance is okay. I hope he doesn't do it again.

Well, telling HR that others are also sleeping sometimes, made my boss decide that he be the eye . Thus, with his revelation, HR will also review the CCTV footages and give memos to the concerned. If he does it again, then he will already be fired, as agreed upon.

Well honesty is really the best policy. Good thing that he was given second chance that he have to take care of. Maybe taking nap during break time could help somehow but if he prefer to be in that job, I guess he better used to it and have to do his best on it.

Actually, when he applied, he already knows that he could be on the night shift, ardoy. Though he said that he thought he can handle the sleepiness. And he further said that he saw others sleeping too. Though, in his case, he slept on the couch fully reclined, with the gamers playing by his side! Thus, because he was honest to admit it and with his revelation about the others, made management decide that he be the lookout at that store. I hope he will make good this time.

I guess he was at least honest and willing to pay the consequences, so I think he deserved a chance. If he does it again, he knows what will happen.

Yes, he was warned that should it happen again, he will be surely terminated. And he promised. And he also told HR that it wasn't only him who does that, so HR will be reviewing the CCTV footages so memos could be given to those who did the same.

He really need to adjust his life if he really wants this job. It's the price he's got to pay for dong this kind of work if he wants to get any means of livelihood. I find so humane that he is being given another chance by the company; not too many companies do that.

Actually, he was referred by our boss. But when she came to know what he did, she told the HR to do what she has to do. So HR, reprimanded him and implied that he better resign lest he will be terminated. Thus, he tendered resignation. But the boss after she heard from him that others are also doing it, had changed her mind. He made him commit not to do it anymore and he should be the lookout of erring employees on that store. Thus, he was given a second chance. The HR was also made to review the CCTv and give reprimand to others who are doing the same.

I think most of the companies does not allow employees to sleep during the night or at work. I was in night shift. I used to sleep for around 10 to 30 minutes outside when I feel tired at night. I think they should be allowed to take a nap from 10 to 30 minutes outside inside the canteen or something during the night shift during breaks.
