In a weird ritual in the southern state of Karnataka (India), hindu priests toss small babies from the rooftops of temples down at men who wait with their sheets outstretched to catch the babies. apparently, this exercise is supposed to make the poor, unsuspecting kids stronger.. :? there are many more such rituals here..surprising, sometimes shocking..I dont understand that how people get convinced to do such things, dont they have brains..

Tradition. Why do we say people are adult at 18? Why do we wear suits and ties to work? It's all just tradition, most of it completely stupid. But without it, life would be terribly dull.

Of course these people have brain, they accepted this type of weird ritual performed on their babies is because they truly believe they and their babies will be blessed by whatever supernatural divine in that sect belong to the Hindu priest. You will be surprised how religion doctrine or teaching can alter the mindset of many believes including very smart people and convince them in many seemingly shocking ritual acts from a non believer perspective. It just can't be explain in scientific way on how a swayed person 's brain is supposed to work, logical explanation has no place in dissecting their thought process.

My friend, the only wish i have right now is to pray that those parent down by the temple rooftop are able to catch their fallen babies in time before they hit the ground, so that those poor babies are not in danger of smashing their little skull and spill their blood all over the temple floor or unlucky enough grow up with just broken limp, hand or backbone instead of a stronger body. These poor babies are the one going to suffer the most if thing turn out very wrong at the end of the day, that is quite a chilly afterthought for me, but i am quite convince nothing much you and me can do with this weird tradition and belief, except talk about it.

Sure they have brain. But some people's brain work differently than others. These seemingly baseless rituals are traditions that have probably been going on for generations. Respect for these traditions are hard to understand and even harder to change.

I wouldn't do anything you aren't comfortable with. These 'supersitions' have been around for many, many years and aren't going to change over night.

respect for traditions and culture is alright but sometimes it turns into superstition..keeping to the beaten track is something beyond my understanding, I believe in God, respect my culture, like to do rituals also but somehow cant convince myself to do foolish things..

it is baseless.. absurd even. But sad to say there are some people still confined to their beliefs and traditions that it hinders them to see the whole truth behind it.

Really? How high do they toss the babies from? I think that it us too much for the baby to handle.

Has there any been reports wherein kids have been harmed because of this rituals? Coz if there is, then this should be really stopped coz it really doesn't do any good to the baby.

Hello jenny, as i saw in the documentary on this ritual it was told that these kids get shocked and scared very badly after doing it..situations become serious sometimes..:( it should be stopped but religious believes are something where administration becomes helpless (specially in India).

Wow, that's pretty bizarre. I sure wouldn't let them toss my baby from a roof top. I'd like to know also how some people get convinced to do certain things. Guess that's what makes us all different.
