today is Ash Wednesday for Catholics, they would go to Church and put ashes on their forehead especially for devouts.. but not putting it is ok too, it does mean one sin.. lol as i am not putting ashes on my forehead, i believe in my faith, it has been a long time since i had ashes on my forehead. some officemates do fret here right now because they was not able to put ashes on their forehead this morning and are leaving early to attend the afternoon mass... this is also the start of the season where Catholics fast and do abstinence.

Catholics are mandated to go through this ritual of putting the sigh of the Cross on the forehead as an affirmation that from dust we came and dust we shall return. And because we know that we are all fated by our mortality, we must constantly remind ourselves that we have to believe in the good news and live the gospel. Your mates must have fretted because we are called to do this just once a year, to signal the commencement of the forty days of fasting, abstinence and alms giving. Definitely, it is not a question of faith that they did fret, they did so because they would not want to let down our Lord by being amiss on a day when He wanted us to share an hour with Him. It was difficult, for it was the middle day of the week, but what is difficulty if it is to queue up for our Lord.

Many churches observe Ash Wednesday and also are more introspective during the season of Lent. You are right, it is not a sin not to have the ashes. Where I lived growing up we did not, since we were not Catholic. I attend the same protestant church here, in a different place, and it is offered as an option along with a service on Ash Wednesday. I wish you many blessings this season.
