With dogs, you can identify what breed are really smart. How about with cats? I am a little frustrated because my family hated my last kitten and given it away. I cannot blame them because they gave me time to train him. But he never learned his lesson.

It how you make it, most think cats will normally know everything. It's sort of like saying a kid should be born knowing how to eat, walk, talk and so on. With that attitude you and your family have you shouldn't have animals period. I know many who expect this out of their animals, and to know how to do things, then they get ride of the animal. Shows how irresponsible and cruel you are.

You are judgmental 911Ricki. You don't read the entire discussion to know better. Let me reiterate to you. My parents initially forbidden me to have cats because we have children. 10 Months old and another who is 3 years old. The kitten that we adopted stayed with us for four months and we tried all efforts to teach it how to eliminate properly because we want to keep it. But after giving it some chance to learn, it is still not learning. The 3 year old was also very afraid of the kitten and cannot go out of her room anymore because she had a bad experienced with the cat scratching her. So my parents decided to give it to a neighbor whom we think would be able to take care of it. IS THAT CRUELTY? I think you are the cruel one.

And by the way... we have dogs, cats and fishes. So you see, we are really animal lover. I hope I made my point Mr. IRRESPONSIBLE. Sorry to say it but your response is really irresponsibly done.

I'm the cruel one, I end up with people's cats who are just like you. Take on the responsibility, then just toss it out because it's not working. You should of thought about the children before you got an animal. I see this at the shelter all the time, people abdonded and surrenering their animals because of a child, pure irresponsible. I am sure the child just sat there and the cat caame up and scratched it right?. Highly doubtful. I own several cats, rabbits, guinea pigs and hamster, who were surrender in similar situations, it all comes back to irresponsible pet owners, and not doing the research before getting an animal, it's so sad because in the end the animal suffers. Animal behaviour has a reason behind it, not because they are stupid. Just like you stated, just because it couldn't potty train properly it's stupid. Maybe, you are the stupid one. Animals are like little children who don't grow up. There is a reason behind this, maybe it had health issues and you dismisssed them, not enough attention, abuse or neglect from you and the children, the list could go on. I hoppe you never get an animal in the future I would feel so bad for it.

Cats are plenty smart, they are smart enough to not obey. You put a cat in a maze, they lay down and go to sleep. I have a bunch of really smart cats. Now, my beloved Scamp was NOT one of them. He was, without a doubt, the stupidest cat I ever met, but he was sweet and beautiful. The two cats in my avatar, Rygel, the big one, and Oliver, the kitten (he's long since grown up BTW) both taught themselves to jump into our arms. Well, Rygel taught himself to do it and Oliver copied him. Now I have 4 that jump regularly from the floor and several more that will jump from tables and counters. So, what lessons were you trying to teach him?

blue eyed white cats are often deaf http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deaf_white_cat the blue eyes are connected to white spotting, which you can't see because the cat is already white... I knew a blue eyed black and white cat, but since his ears were black, it didn't affect his hearing...

I gave him potty training. I tried placing a tray with soil and sands on the area where he loves to eliminate but what he does is just do outside the potty. He's gone now. My parents gave it to our neighbor. He's pure white. I so like his eyes because it was blue. I'll get another cat someday when I have more time to pet it and cuddle it. Have a great day!

A few breeds have distinct personality traits. For instance, Siamese are talkers. I don't know if any one breed is smarter than others, though.

Siamese is one that I'm aware of . They can supposedly can learn very quickly to use a human toilet on their own. I'm sure your family would appreciate the money saved. The more intelligent cats require a lot of time and attention though. http://mysmelly.com/content/cats/most-intelligent-cat-breeds.htm

Cats and dogs differ in smartness, they say you can spot a smart dog by its breed but a cat on the other hand unless you are truly familiar with cat breeds then you might end up with a common household cat. I may self is fond of cats, I have two of them right now, I don't train them but I see to it that I have time to play with them once in a while, cats learn well when you play with them. You can sense if a cat is smart when he reacts to every action you make, like my cats, they are able to distinguish the sound of my motorcycle, whenever I come back from work they will run towards the garage and greet me. Early in the morning they are the ones who will knock on my door either by scratching it or making a sound. Cats are very smart indeed, they can learn things through experience and they are loyal too. My cats even accompany me when I go for a walk in my backyard.

Hello agmamayo. I can see that you are really fond of cats. Thanks for sharing your experience with them. Maybe, because I lack time to pet them, that's why it was really hard to train them and my parents doesn't have the patience to do so. Have a great day!!!

Ha. That's a funny question. I think all cats are smart. All breeds have something they are really good at, and being good at something means they have some intelligence in them. Training...it depends on what you try to teach them, but if it's something like 'potty' training...that's something that has a way to it. You just can't train cats like you do dogs.

Hello Kayltjeee. You are right. I found that out as soon as I got this white cat. My brother discouraged me to take it initially but I did not listen to him. He noticed that the behavior of the cat was so restless. It would be much easier if I got a much younger kitten. Thanks for commenting here.

I wouldn't say that dogs are that smart. Rather they are obedient. Cats are more sneaky and lazy. Don't expect a cat to fallow your orders or running after a stick you throw. Cats are clever in their own way. I don't think it's possible to train a cat as you can do that with a dog. It's a shame though that your family didn't like your cat. Cats are really cute.

Hello mondaylover. Thanks for sympathizing with me. Right now, my job does not allow me to get a cat because I travel a lot. But when I have that opportunity I would buy one. Have a nice day!
