I am from India. In India though we keep Cats as the pets, dogs enjoy more popularity than the Cats. But in India several superstitions are attached with the Cats. Today in this column I am going to discuss about some superstitions attached with the Cats prevailing all over the World.
In India people consider it as a bad omen if their way is crossed by a black Cat (for that matter it is applicable to any colored Cat, but black intensifies the Bad Omen according to them).
Killing a Cat is considered to be a grave act of sin in Hindu religion and the person killing the Cat has to donate a statue of a Cat made up of Gold after performing worship at the bank of Ganga River.
In Ireland people believe that seeing a black cat by moonlight is a sign of impending epidemic for the entire locality.
In France it is believed that carrying a Cat over a stream brings a bad luck. They also believe that the black cats have an extraordinary power of finding buried treasures. For that they take the black cat to the junction where five roads meet and leave it there to follow the path of the Cat to reach the buried treasure!
In Yorkshire people believe that having a black cat brings luck to them but seeing another’s black cat can bring bad luck to them.
In Amish tradition it is believed that a Cat placed in a cradle can help the newly wedded couple to conceive quickly, but for that the cat has to stay in the cradle for some time. If it jumps out they believe that there can be a delay in the conception.
In India have many beliefs attached to cats as per the Vastu Shashtra. Some of them are mentioned below:
Grey Cats are considered lucky according to Vastu Shashtra.
Entering a black Cat is considered as a good luck sign.
While setting out for a journey if one sees a Cat on the left side, then it is considered as a good omen.
Giving birth to kittens by a cat is considered to be a good Omen for the head of the house owning the cat as it is believed that evil spirits will never enter such house. It is also believed that there will be prosperity in the family within three months.
If Cat is follows a person coming out of the house then it is considered that there will be a monetary gain to the family.
Wiping repeatedly one ear three times is an indication that some guests are expected.
Seeing three black Cats together is considered very lucky in Vastu Shashtra,
Presence of Cat while entering a City, village or house is considered as a bad omen. If a Cat licks the foot of a woman than it is believed hat her father in law may face a danger for his life. Similarly if a Cat licks the fore head of a lady then it is considered bad for her husband’s health and life.
Falling of a Cat on a sleeping person is considered as a bad Omen. If Cat calls repeatedly while some one is going out of the house then it is considered that there is some danger to that man’s life in near future.
These are some superstitions I have mentioned here prevailing around the World about the Cats. I will be interested to know about anything new to make this list a bit lengthier one! Your response will be highly appreciated! Thanks!

Thanks for this discussion because it is very very interesting. I never knew there were so many superstitions about cats all over the world. Now i knew about a black cat crossing your path being unlucky because that's how it is in the United States where i am from. Tho i never knew some considered it good luck to own one then bad luck to see someone else's. This is all very interesting and i en joyed reading this and learned something from my lot. I used to own 3 cats but they are all gone now and i never knew they had so many superstitions. The Amish one sounds kind f interesting maybe i should have tried that when i first got married lol. Tho back then i never heard of the Amish superstition about cats and getting pregnant. Thanks again for the very very interesting conversation.

Very interesting article. Yes, if a black cat crosses roads, many people stop for sometime and then go. They believe it is bad omen. I dont know rationale justification relating to them.

Hi,
Thank you for sharing interesting information about superstitions related to cats. Cats look very cute but there are many superstitions attached to them. I know the superstitions in India but I don't know about them in all over the world.

I have heard that some people always say black cats are bad luck. I have a black and white cat and a black and white dog. That way I hope the black and white will bring me good luck. What is it when you have a black and white mixed animal.???

who know maybe it bring you a luck one
