He's Doing Well

Thankyou to everyone who offered kind words for my little goat kid that I helped to deliver the other day. He was in a fairly bad way at first and I was quite seriously worried about him as his mum wasn't really interested in him and he was very weak. He seems to be holding his own though and, although he's skinnier than I would like, I think he's out of danger now. I've included a photo of him for anyone who wants to see. It was taken last night, but today he's been on his feet a little more. Have you raised an animal that had a bad start in life? I'm pleased that in this case it looks positive now, but we've not always been so lucky and I've lost little animals before. Sadly there's not always anything you can do to help. For me personally, I felt worst when I lost a litter of baby rabbits after the mother died.

I hope he thrives. Maybe you need to get Grandma back in for another head butt? I don't see the photo. Is that just me?

goat kid #2 - the wee kid I helped deliver
Hmmmm, mylot doesn't seem to want to post it today, but I'll try again now. I'm locking the two mums and their babies up together at night in the hope that she gets the idea.

When I tucked them in for the night a couple of hours ago he was lively and playing. I don't think he'll be needing that Boost :)

I'm looking forward to the photo, I don't see it right now. I often forget to upload photos that I say I've included! My family has a history of raising runts, which is what we call the weakest and smallest of a litter. Most of our dogs have been runts when I was growing up, kittens, too. My youngest son has a dog right now that the owners were going to euthanize because she was the runt and very sickly. He got her when she was a few weeks old and fed her from a bottle, carrying her everywhere with him to keep her warm and her spirits high. She is a wonderful dog now, lively and with a sparkling personality. I met her for the first time on my recent trip and fell in love with her immediately. My other son bought a runt a little over a year ago and he got her cheap because she, too, wasn't the best of the litter. She's a lovely little chihuahua so tiny you think that you'll hurt her just by stroking her head but she is a little powerhouse that thinks she's as big as a horse! It's funny to see her stand in front of my son when a stranger approaches, lifting her hackles and growling at the "threat" to her master. She's very loving once she gets to know you. I'm glad your new kid is doing better. My neighbor who raised goats used to give kids like that special supplemental milk and never lost one. I hope this baby grows into a healthy adult!

So tiny, so adorable! If it was a girl you could name her Hope because you hope the kid grows big and healthy. I just now looked up the masculine version of "Hope" in case you'd want to consider it. Amal (Ah-Mawl) is Hebrew/Sanskrit that means pure, hard work, labor, hope. I hope you come up with a good name for him if you don't like that one.

Sorry to hear about the litter of rabbits but glad the goat is doing so well now. You are a very good person to help that animal and all the ones you have helped. I never cared for baby animals but i a a friend once that also lost some bunnies because the mother wouldn't care for the babies and my friend couldn't too well. yes it is sad when animals die especially little baby ones hat you have cared for yourself. Again your a very good person to help this goat and all the baby animals you have helped.

Rabbits seem to abandon their babies very easily if they are disturbed. It's a real shame, as they are terribly hard to save if they do.

Hiya GM, Me neither I cannot see the photo of the baby Goat. Sometimes that does happen if you are trying to upload a photo. The Dog we have now was very dirty and had intestinal parasites of course when you buy them you donĀ“t know that they have them either. I guessed he had them when we got him home and I was cleaning the house up all night for the next two days. We changed his food gradually he would not eat properly for months I managed to get him right and now his coat is beautifully healthy and shiny and he runs and walks properly no limps or strains and no ticks which he had quite a few as well poor thing. Of course this is what you should not do everyone would give me the thumbs down but he follows me around all day long that I almost tread on his paws. He will only eat if I feed him and I believe the special attention I have had to give him has made him grow beautifully and is still growing and very strong and muscular too. He is super intelligent and I have a very strong suspicion that he was in another house before we bought him ourselves just by the way he behaved but now he is over that thank goodness.xxx

He will have loved all that attention and known that you cared. Now he'll be devoted

Hiya GM, Is his name Lucky then? What a lovely idea as well. I have been scrolling up and down on the page to find the photo and I have just found it that is so lovely she seems like she has got the notion of being a Mom now and he looks well considering. May it all go well for the two of them.

I'm glad to hear that he is is doing better. It would be sad to lose an animal like that. Losing a whole litter of baby rabbits would be awful. I personally haven't experienced anything like that and I hope I will never have to.

Mummy rabbits seem to abandon their babies quite easily, which is so frustrating as there's so little you can do to help.

As soon as you name them, the trouble begins, you get too attached and they become substitute children, you feel their pain and you want to do everything you can for them, it is heartbreaking when you see them suffer and worse die. We always go to the animal sanctuary to give animals a good home, rescued animals that have only seen cruelty and punishment from humans, they need extra love, support and care which we have in abundance. Is this the goat you christened Macintosh? Beautiful creature, I hope he pulls through, he's in the right hands at least!

It is good for the little one that you and his grandma are watching out too. Maybe his mom should not be a breeder? I have bottle raised kittens. One that had a bit of a birth defect and was rejected. I might have succeeded, but I had school and no one took care of him during the day when I was gone. He had a "wry neck" and probably would not have had a good life. Then there was Shamrock, who was another little kitten, both were Siamese. I bottle fed her and she was almost like a pet monkey. Unfortunately she got ran over by a car. I had named her Shamrock because she was lucky to be alive. If I was anywhere around she was perched on my shoulder.

She seems to be improving in terms of her interest levels, but I'll certainly see if she grows any before I consider another pregnancy.

About a year and a half ago I took in two foster kittens whose mother had been hit by a car. One was eating like crazy right away, and the other had to be bottle fed. They were maybe 3 - 4 weeks old. Unfortunately the bottle fed one didn't make it. My son had named him Pop, and taken a real shine to him even though we only had him about a day and a half. We buried him behind the house. He was a tabby with really beautiful markings. His brother was solid black and really feisty. It was so hard giving him up for adoption, but he got a really good home.
