Do You Use Smileys with Members Who Are 'Under the Code-Limit'? (

I will often try to keep from using 'bold, italic, underline & the smileys' if one of the discussers I'm responding-to has less than 200 experience-points (although there are exceptions ) I think that 'using the myLot-code' with them would be like 'using fourth-year terminology with first-year students.' What do you do? Do you think about it?

When you are having a meal and there is a young child at the table eating with you too, do you use your fingers instead of using a knife and fork? All users can use bolf, italic and underline right from their first post here. They do not have to wait until 200 to use it. They can't use the smilies but as a previous response suggested, if we use them it might spur them on to be more active. Personally I don't change my style of writing online, or my dress offline, to fit in with the crowd

"When you are having a meal and there is a young child at the table eating with you too, do you use your fingers instead of using a knife and fork?" Ummm yeah ... isn't that why we allow children to dine with us in the first place, so that we have an excuse to use our fingers and have a little fun at the dinner table?

And the reason we let them watch TV with us is so that we can dance and sing along!

I generally speak and write the same way with everyone at first. If I find that people do not understand me, then I might decide to "dumb things down" and not use 'fourth-year terminology with first-year students' the same way as I might "bland things down" and not use emoticons with certain people that seem to be easily distracted by them. On the other hand, emoticons can be a good tool to help show that you are joking with someone or teasing someone or just being a bit devilish, so I might just use them anyway {insert "whistle" emoticon here}.

If you were not using them for egalitarianism or politeness reasons, I would perhaps think this a bit excessive, but I would accept it. But I find really weird your reason : do you think that new members have never seen a smiley before they joined myLot ? Personally I like to use smileys, and I don't make any difference between members when I use them.

I think it depends on people tastes. I like to use smileys to interesting discussions, but I rarely use bold, italic or underlined text options. I disagree that people here need to get this options fast as possible. Because, I think it will decrease that people discussions quality same is for comments.

I rarely use bold and italics and underlines as well because I mylot through my phone and its troublesome typing in between the codes. I dont think its really that important to use those as long as you are able to bring your message across correctly.

I actually never thought about it before that way. I see what your saying but some people also need the motivation to get them to the point where they can use them! =) I know when I first started it was most definitely motivation for me to be able to use the smiley's!

I don't even think about it. Why hold back though? It would give them something to think about, "hey that's cool why can't I do that?' then when they find out, they have incentive to reach that mark.

maria, do please include the name of the person you're responding-to when they're not the DS. Because otherwise I have to assume you could've been talking to the DS (me); but I've been in the same place I always am

Wow1 I never thought about it this way! I use smileys when what I want to express is clearer using a smiley. I never pay attention to star color or experience points.

This is a first for me. Although I rarely use smileys, when I use them, I don't think about who I'm responding to. This is probably the funniest post I've seen since morning. Thanks for bringing a grin on my face. Seriously, I don't think "using fourth-year terminology with first-year students" should be a reason not to use smileys. If anything, it'll help people know that such things can actually be incorporated in one's post.

Using one can motivate newcomers to work harder so that they could use the same thing also. I don't find anything wrong with it. Have a great day!

I have started using smileys since I could use it. And you should use mylot code with such members

I still use the smileys because they are part of how i respond now. And besides i think those new people know what the smileys mean anyway. Except of course for the ninja, when i was new, i thought it was a robber or a thief or something that stole stuff. Its nice using the smileys and they're like badges that you got over the 200 mark, when the new people ask, I'll tell them that they get the smileys last 200 and it might motivate them to type Moore somehow.
