When I was aged 16 years old I needed to decide where I would study. I did not wish to go on to the sixth form at the secondary school. I decided to study at a further education college on the River Thames. My course was Business and Finance Shipping and Transport. If I had not done that I would have probably chosen to do A Levels. Funnily enough I did A Level English Literature the year before I went to university in my mid twenties. Then years later in my thirties I did A Level Travel and Tourism just for my own enjoyment. What did you study or work in from age 16 to 18 years old? Do you think young people have any different choices these days?

I just turned 17 when I first got to university. It was in a different city which was an hour and a half plane ride away from home. I must admit that I didn't have a clue on what to study back then. But I had to choose a course to get in university. So, I picked Engineering. I'm now still trying to decide if it was a wise decision.

I remember my grandmother telling about my mother and uncle when they lived in England, my mother had good grades, but because she was a girl, she could not enter what they considered academics, but had to go to a business school whereas her brother who had lower grades then she could go on academics. I think that really affected my mother and she never really recovered. I now here that young people have more choices and are not stuck in the class system of bygone years. However when I was around that age, and they had this test and because I had good motor skills assumed that the only thing I could do was office work. However my mind was set in a more creative fashion and every office job I did was not so good. I also was not good at science or chemistry so could not be a nurse as I wanted. It did not mean that I hated science, I loved it, but did not have the talent for it. But I have always loved writing.

Hi. From age 16 to 18, I was at high school and I studied subject such as math, physic, literature, biography, etc. Each county has their own education system. I'm from Vietnam and the education system is not developed as much as Eu. There are many difficulty like I didn't even know what I would do or like to do at that time. The education just taught us the subject at school not life skill or career guidance until I was in grade 12. I heard that in US, students in grade 10 can decide what job they like to do in future and they will study subject related that job and at the university too. Now young people can decide what they want to study but not all of them because the culture, family,... That what I think. Sorry if my english is not good :) Truong

I actually agreed with Pres. Obama, that by the time a student is 18 years old, that they should either have a 2 year tech degree, or an associate degree. Many are goofing off during this time.

I was twelve years old when I went to high school level and I finished it when I was sixteen. That time, I need to choose what is my course to be taken in my college years and it was so hard to decide because I do not know what is the best for me. I asked my parents regarding that and they just let me choose what I want. Before, I learned that the most trending course during that time is Information technology and so I took that course. I did not regret that I chose that course.

My friend I hated school that much I couldn't wait to leave, I left in July 1987, seems like a lifetime ago now. I joined a Youth Training Scheme and that is where I learnt a lot of skills, including touch typing, at 17 I got my RSA Stage 1 qualification with 'distinction' the highest grade, I was able to get a job as a secretary at 18! I often wonder if my life would have turned out differently if I had of stayed on. I did however go back to college as a mature student at 32. I think it's far more difficult for 16 to 18 year olds nowadays, due to the major problem of mass unemployment and of course the cost of the fees.

I dropped out of college during a rather difficult period in my teens, but I did do A levels a few years later at evening classes and subsequently my degree. I personally don't think that further education is right for everyone at that age, and that for some kids it would be better to get some life and work experience and return to study when they've a better idea of what they'd like to do.

I was in high school during those years but I worked at a grocery store called 10-M Foods. It was on the corner of 10th and Meridian, clever huh? Anyway, during that time I had a car and it needed gas and I was responsible for the insurance as well. My last year of high school I was taking college classes because I only had half a day at high school. I think that kids choose to do what they want, if they want to succeed then they will reach for it. If they don't, get the basement ready cause they are staying for life.

When I 16 I finished the 10th grade and the next two years I spent at a special highscoool. A normal highschool in my country lasts 3 years. The school that I went to was a special highschool that only lasted two years. The subjests in the special highschool and the normal highschool are almost the same, but at the special highschool you have to finish every subject in 2 years instead of 3 years. We had many lessons each day and we always had a lot of homework. I spent most of the day at the school and when I returned to my home I spent the rest of the day on homework. There wasn't really much time for other activities and if I had to make the decision today I would have chosen a normal highschool instead, because that would have been less stressful and there would have been more time for other activities.

education - This is an image for education
Hello maximax8 and when i was 16 yrs old had various dreams to pursue but mine main problem was to choose such an side where i do get maximum chances to complete mine dream as well as mine marks were also to be sufficient for that field. First choice was for scientific education at higher levels but due to lower percentage of marks did choose commerce field and now nearly am an successful as per mine education but still do miss the science field where you enjoy experimenting and inventing new things. Don know much about current generations as they wanna race up the ladder within 5 sec time.

When I was 16-17 I was still in secondary school since I live in Quebec, but as soon as it was done I started studying Computer Science and Mathematics which I really like. Next year I will be studying Software Engineering.

This is very common thing that the Most of youngsters have at the ages 16-18. In my time I was started to do Advanced level. I did mathematics as a main subject because I am fluent in maths. But we have to think that this is the turning point of our whole life. if we get wrong decision we will fail at the end. Most parents direct their children to be a Doctor or Engineer but in my point of view it should be done according to child's talents. As an example if someone clever in dancing better to chose Art subjects. Most youngsters do not think about this fact. They always try to follow the trend. This is not a good habit when we make decisions.

I went to a high school where you could also take college courses at the same time that you took high school courses. I really enjoyed high school the years that I was 16 to 18. That seems so long ago. I am married now with three children.

I think young people are more prepared and decisive when it comes to studies when they reach 18 years of age. At that time, they can somehow grasp on what things to do in life and are more matured compared to those 16 years olds.
