Why do we have a high crime rate?

Is it the government's fault why we have a high crime rate or is it the Law enforcement's fault. Its too stressful to see so much violence in our country's local news. Violence should stay in fiction. Its so disgusting to watch the news that robbers are so willing to kill innocent people for the sake of money. Its so stressful to see people getting killed for no reason by some drug abuser. I notice the countries with small crime rates are usually first world countries with good education system and have low population. but that are also some 3rd world countries that are actually safe but depends on region. Base on statistics the safest places in our country due to low crime rate are Davao and Batanes. I remember Marikina use to have a high crime rate until Bayani Fernando lead it.

Poverty, unemployment and lack of education are the common reasons why people tend to involve themselves with a lot of crimes. I think that the government should make a very effective program in helping these poor people uplift themselves from poverty.

I believe a self respecting person wont commit a crime because they know the consequences. I don't think self respect is part of our values lessons. I know poverty is always blamed for crimes but it makes me wonder, there are very poor cities with low crime rate, I wonder what is their secret.

The first thing that went through my head after reading your response is GRAFT AND CORRUPTION. Offenders would bribe authorities to let them escape from what they have done.

I really think our educational system will need some spanking, Education forms a society , we have a good culture but there are things that needs to be fixed.

Hi Capt. My brother just came back from there after visiting with a friend and family. His friend got robbed while they were in a Jeepney, but somebody protected her from getting stabbed. Apparently they try to kill you after so they don't get caught by the police? Seems like those criminals don't think things through very well. Anyhow, perhaps both government and law enforcement need to be held accountable in some way for how things are going. Not only education should be looked at in crime ridden places, but more employment opportunities and better help for those with mental issues.

they always blame the cops when the truth is that the cops in the Phils are outnumbered and outmatch with thousands of criminals running around the street. it's because of poverty and lack of education that led them to do these things, it's a different life when you are born with almost nothing. some were brought up by syndicates and becomes criminality as part of their lives. lack of employment oppportunities is another case.

What is the requirement for being a cop over there? Because over here you don't really need a college or high school degree to become a police officer. Just some training. If its like that there, then more people should try and see about it. @Capt. There is no need to apologize. My own country is not perfect in the least bit. I'm embarrassed by us all the time.

I am sorry about what happened to your brother. i felt embarrassed for that, in the name of my people's country, apologize. Most crimes i believe happens at night, there should be more patrols at night to decrease the crime rate. Anyway Philippines have Zero crime rate whenever Manny Pacquiao have a match or if Miss Universe is on air.

It is the fault of the government, the law makers, and the people. This is because, we have local governments, and they are corrupt themselves. There was even a case the Mayor and the Vice mayor ordered to have a policeman get killed. The system is flawed from the inside. There are lack of coordination, and cooperation between governments, and Police branches. It takes time and often some motives are ruled out because our police investigators do not look beyond what is in the surface. If a person was killed inside their home and it would turn out something is missing - our police would immediately say it could be robbery. So what if it was not robbery and something is more than to it and it was only done to mislead the investigationn? Nah our police are probably too lazy to do more works, documentation, interviews, investigations, etc. They'd get some robbers on their list (from their fall guys roster) and close the investigation - this fall guy would eventually bail because the case is not moving. People who does crimes are not afraid of getting caught because all they have to do is mislead the police and their just out here with all of us - we could have ridden a jeepney with them or a bus or the MRT and they are roaming free, just planning their next target. The Laws we have too are outdated, syndicates have found a way to "influence" children and teens and make them commit these crimes and be safe from being put in jail.

I think the crime rate is proportionate to the materialistic outlook of a society and the amount and level of poverty in a country. It is a fact that people now want more things than they can afford. Stress and anger, frustration for not reaching the goal you have set for yourself can also lead to crime. Now in countries, where it is easy for a common man to at least buy a decent house for himself and his family within his means, enough food to eat, appropriate clothes to wear and an educational system where their children get good quality and affordable education, in that nation crime rates will be less. This is as close we can get to Utopia. SO a country which comes closer to this scenario automatically will have lower crime rates.

I remember on Tv they show a country where there is like zero crime rate and you can see the cops relaxing as the jail cells are empty. Then the only prisoner is a man charged for cheating on his wife. I dont think a government with an iron fist is needed to stop crime, A government that will prioritize its people and educate the people on how to improve their lives, things will be better.

Hello CaptainAlbert, Even in our neighborhood now there's a lot of crime because a lot of people from Manila are moving into the other municipalities like here in cavite. before it was really quiet here until things started to change. though, it's more commercialized now and stores are easily accessible, so as the poor and beggars started to rise as well.. there should be more proper zoning of the areas around the country, not to mention add more cops on the field.

I must say i agree with you in saying that there crime rates keeps getting higher except for your mentioned places. Am i right to think that it depends on how strict the leaders are in certain places to decrease these crime rates? Well, if that is the case, then our government should try to assess on how they can emulate the leaders in those places.
