Would you go back?

Canvas grocery bags - Canvas bags

This morning I had to go to the grocery store for cat food and I usually bring the canvas bags the store sell so you don't have to use plastic bags. I forgot the bags and noticed they have some new ones 2 for $3 and they look stronger than the previous ones I have bought...so I took two of them. I always put the bags ahead of my groceries so the bagger will know I want to use them. When I got home I was looking at my receipt and the cashier didn't charge me for them. We sort of know each other because it seems I always get in her line and I'm sure she knows I always bring the canvas bags. Now I'm feeling like I cheated the store and almost want to go back to make ammends. Would you go back? Is it stealing if you don't know at the time what's happening? I believe in Karma and feel like if I don't go back my day will not be a good one!

How far away is it? After all, it wasn`t your fault. You can tell the cashier what happened the next time you go there.I always do that, but it is usually the other way around. They charge me for something and it is not placed in my bags.

With all the snow and the slippery walkways it's further than I want to go just to do that. The next time I go there I will tell them. I've never...that I know of..been charged for anything I didn't get.

I have been charged for something I wanted to buy, but then it did not reach the shopping bag.

I would call the store and explain what happened, as you just might end up with a free purchase from the grocery store. It happened to me once and the store even gave me a free coupon, as they were happy to have such an honest customer.

Yes, I wish I thought of that. They'll probably think it's not worth the trouble for $3. I'm going to call them. Thanks for the idea.

I would go back and tell her, that the bags are what you bought that day, not your usual bags from home.

If the weather is better tomorrow I'm going to show her the receipt and tell her what happened.

That sounds like the best thing to do.

I had something similar happen, only the amount involved was almost $20.00. I called the store and explained that the clerk had failed to charge me for what I had in the bottom part of the cart. I was told to bring in my receipt. when I got there, the manager told me to go get an identical item off the shelf, go through the line again, pay for the item and have the stock boy put it back on the shelf. I got the impression that they would have preferred that I just kept quiet about the matter. This was at the largest super market in the state. The manager might not have cared about $20.00 worth of merchandise walking out the door, but my conscience was cleared when I paid for what I got. In your case, I think I would have kept my receipt until my next visit to that store, showed it to my friend cashier, and explained to her what happened. She could easily add that amount to your groceries and no one would be the wiser.

Sometimes I think they just let things go because they don't want to bother with paperwork or deal with another cashier. Anyway I went back and told them the story and they told me to forget it.

I agree that it is frequently something they don't want to deal with. The amount that you were undercharged was small, and it was to their advantage for you to have the reuseable bags. Still, it bothered your conscience, as it would have mine.

I don't think it was stealing since you did not realized that you was not charged for them. I would just pay for them the next time you go to the store.

No, I didn't realize it until I got home and checked my receipt. The $3 charge was not there. I did go back yesterday and they thanked me for being honest and said to forget about it. I wonder how many times things like this happen to them.

I've actually been faced with similar to this in my life and I have to admit that I've not been the person that has ever gone back to the store to let them know that they had failed to charge me for something. The reason that I don't go back is because it is simply inconvenient to me, I would have to load the kids back up and go back to the store. And then there is always this fear that if I would go back in and tell them that they'd failed to charge me for something that they would turn around and try to accuse me of shoplifting.

I'm lucky because the store is just around the corner from me. I did go back and they thanked me for being so honest and said it's only $3 so forget it.

Honesty pays my friend and I am sure the cashier and the store will be appreciative of you returning after all it was a genuine mistake, it will earn you brownie points too, I would keep the till receipt and on your next return tell them that it was a genuine mistake. You never know they'll probably turn round and say it doesn't matter and thank you for your honesty, that way next time you shop there you won't feel guilty!

I'm thinking the same thing. They will be happy that I took the time to go back there with the receipt and tell them what happened.

I'd just wait till next shopping trip and then tell her to charge you for them. IF you and she "know" each other, I'm sure she'll be fine with it.

You can sort it out the next time you're there. I wouldn't make a special effort to go back immediately and right things; it's simply not worth it. I would also like to point out that most store mistakes are in the store's favor.

Of course they are! nothing like this has ever happened in my favor before. It ended up that the sun came out and I went to the store. When I told them what happened and showed them the receipt they said not to worry about it and thanked me for being so honest.

a pleasant day to you ctryhnny, if i will be placed in your shoe, i will go back to the store and inform the cashier that he/she forgot to punch the machine for the bag that i have bought. although i would cost an extra money for me if i need to transport once again. still, i will go back and inform the store about the item they forgot to charge.

I'm saving the receipt and the next time I go back...maybe tomorrow if all the ice melts I will show the cashier the mistake.

Going back to the store even at some other time if it is not possible to do it at present will do. What is important is that you acknowledge that there is some mistake or whatever you may call it. Have a wonderful day!
