Freecycle (do people still use it)

Do you all remember the group Freecycle? Is anyone still involved actively with their "home" groups? Just curious. I helped start the Harford County, Maryland group back about 9 or 10 years ago, and left about three years into it because it was taking up way too much time (as a volunteer). I recently found them again because I was looking to find something a good home. Times have changed.

I haven't gotten anything off of ours recently but I get emails everyday so I watch to see what is offered just in case I might see something that I might need lol I think it is great to have them it helps all involved. I have gotten a number of things from freecycle that has helped me a lot. I hope it never ends!

Tricia W, thanks for the response. It is a good thing! I just think it got too big too fast and now I wonder how it has been doing. It is definitely a good thing that everyone wins, if everyone plays fair! LOL Oh the stories I could share, from when I was a moderator.

I remember it when it was so small, I was part of (and later became group owner) SJFreecycle, which covered half of the state. It was great-I managed to furnish my home, get rid of SO much stuff (and I still had to donate a lot), and make great friends. I also helped start smaller regional groups, at the request of Deron (the founder of Freecycle). I had to leave because it just took up so much of my time. And when I moved in 2010, and tried to join the local group the following year, no one ever approved me (yet the group was active). But the rules that were there when I ran groups had totally changed-and not for the better, in my opinion. I'm not sure if there's a group here locally-I'll have to look to see.

Scoriobabes, thanks for the response! I so agree with the rules thing. There were so many that we had to police, especially here in the Baltimore and Harford County group. I found the Baltimore group first and then was able to start the Harford County group with the blessings of the "man" (Deron). LOL Then I was asked to help step in with the Baltimore group with some other moderators from other local groups that surrounded the area. I know at one time they talked about breaking the bigger groups up by zipcode to make them more manageable but I don't think it ever happened. The group that I started is still covering our entire county. I too made some great friends but also did see a lot of greediness! Which was really sad!!!!

My group (SJFreecycle) encompassed 9 counties at least, which was the reason they asked me to downsize. I tried starting a MoorestownFreecycle, but I left once I moved out of town. And there were a lot of 'outsiders' attempting to get things for resale. Most groups didn't allow pet postings, but I know that I adopted three cats, 2 chinchillas and 2 dogs through Freecycle. The rules just kept getting more and more strict-and the person that was trying to police our group wasn't even from this coast-how can you make rules when you're not familiar with the area? It might have been nice to allow us to continue on with our groups as we started them-SJFreecycle had three active moderators and over 2200 members. Did you notice more greediness before or after the recession started? I started to notice it before, but only some areas. Once gas went up, people started to get picky about who was allowed to pick up!

I loved being a member of freecycle, but I do have to admit that I'm no longer a member. You see, here it used to be a yahoo group and when it was a yahoo group it was easy to post on freecycle. However about two years ago our freecycle in my area moved to a different website and I don't think that it is nearly as user friendly. We do still have a sister type group that is cheapcycle and I am still a member of that. I mean people aren't giving things away for free, but it is still a great resource to have access to.

Exactly Dorannmwin! That's when I was involved when it was on yahoo groups. When I saw the new website it didn't look as user friendly. The yahoo groups did take a lot to moderate and there were lots of rules with the groups that burnt out a lot of the moderators. The new website makes it look like a lot of people are not involved anymore. Very interesting. Thanks for the response.

I have recently signed up for our local area but there hasn't been any activity. I would love to be able to get some furniture that we need but there hasn't been anything posted. I'm trying to look for ways to save our resources and so I thought free cycle would be a good way to start.

Thanks for the response Dominique! I noticed the group that I use to belong to had a lot of activity but now it looks like it barely exists. That is why I threw the question out there. I don't know if the groups got too big too fast or what happened. It is such an awesome idea. I know when we lost my mom I was able to give away a lot of her stuff that I didn't want to try and sell. Keep checking - hopefully things will pick up.

I am a part of the Freecycle group here. We have a ton of people on it and sometimes they really help! I have gotten many good things off there for free, I love it! =) And I have given tons of things away too.

Thanks for the response LovingMyBabies, I am wondering if our group just kind of went the wayside because it does not seem as active as it use to be. I am glad you are getting use out of it.

What is freecycle? Hm is it a place where we can exchange goods with goods with someone else, or am I wrong?

I live on a small Island, and we have (for 7 years) a very, very active "Freecycle"...but I think it could be far more active in the community than it is! It is sad to see the Trash Removal truck, leaving the Island on a weekly basis that is carrying things that could have been recycled. They refuse to accept things of larger size...and my biggest bug bear, is that they don't "re-cycle" building materials! Sometimes we only need a short piece of 2x4, a 1/4 sheet of gyproc...but are forced to buy, a full sheet/piece of each, and the rest is disposed of! They do have the property...and they do have the money, they just DON'T have the foresight...and are a closed group that allows NO input! It would benefit the Island so much, if they would expand their views!

I agree the waste of some people in this world is a sin! I did hear of some of the closed groups being called very dictatorial, back when I was involved. Which is sad but unfortunately some of the things I saw you needed to be like that. Some days, I felt like I was running a day care center instead of trying to help the community. Thanks for the response.

I never heard about it! I do live in Maryland, but in Baltimore city - so Harford County is a ways away from where I am. volunteer groups can take up a huge chunk of time. Although I do a lot of "volunteer" work with stray and feral cats, it is sort of just with a former neighbor who also cares about the cats. We aren't involved in any group, but do use the lowcost spay/neuter of SPCA for the cats - their bargain basement prices for ferals. People have given us money from time to time to help feed these cats and care for them, and when they do, the money goes in to bags of dry food and cases of wet food for them. We've also managed to place a few cats/kittens from time to time.
