When does work crowd out family time too much - and what can you do?

How do you put it altogether with your life? There is such a tug between the people who rely on you at work and the people you share your other part of life with. When do you know when it is too much of one (work) and too little of the other (family)? I once had the chance to ask a panel of state legislators when meeting voters came second and being with family came first. After a clumsy silence, one leaned into her microphone and whispered "never once". That was so sad, but I have since found out so common. How about you - when do you see the scales too out of balance and what can you do?

from the time you have to question whether or not you have balance, you are out of balance. family should always be top priority. if you didn't have your family your life would mean nothing. it's not the same way about work. you can actually live without your job. you can get another. you can't replace your family.

well, i value my time for my family. so when my work interferes with my quality time for my family, i tend to re-evaluate my schedule, and try to fix it. i try my best to fit in my schedule my time with my family. if it is impossible, then i will talk about it with my supervisor. if there is nothing to do, then i will seek for other opportunities outside my job.

I will always choose my family over my career or even money. Like what I always tell my mom, I can always turn to my family for help if I run out of money, but I can never turn to my job when my family went up and left me. Money can be earned, a job can be secured still. But we can never bring back our family if we lost them. Besides, my family is my main reason why I get up and work everyday, why I strive to earn more.
