Planning A Trip To Ottawa

Canada

As you've read from my past posts on here, I love travelling. Because of our low income, we're somewhat limited, but we still manage to have a GREAT time! I went to +NYC on my own, for example, because Hubby was not interested in going there. Sometimes travelling alone saves money. haha Anyway, in this last year we've done dang well! In previous posts I've mentioned going to Montreal, several trips to Toronto, several trips to Kitchener, my trip to NYC, and an anniversary trip to Niagara Falls. This involved staying in a lot of hotel rooms. LOL Walker and I got the idea last year, that we wanted to go to Ottawa, for Canad Day. That would be the same as being in Washington DC on the 4th of July!! :) I love patriotic holidays, so I'd probably enjoy DC in July. :) Now for the planning. With my trip to NYC in Feb, and Walker's desire to go to Comicon in March, that meant we would have to wait till April to start putting money away. $500 in April, May, June, and July, will give us a $2,000 budget to work with. Today I got a promo in my e-mail that if I buy Delta gift cards, I can get additional Aeroplan miles. I'll get miles for paying for the room, in cash or in hotel cards, and if I buy gift cards I'll get extra aeroplan miles, because I took advantage of the promotion. Two plane tickets will get us four flights worth of Aeroplan miles (two return flights, and Aeroplan miles are awarded per one-way traveled), and one of those tickets is going to be free from the +CNIB. With my Delta Privilege card, after our five separate stays at Delta hotels last year, I've got $250 off of food and room charges. AWESOME!! I also have two free room upgrades to the best room available. I may end up booking a cheap room, and with my Privilege card, I can get there, ask for the best room possible, and end up getting a suite! Even if we don't save actual money on the trip, we still earn a ton of miles that will mean money saved on something we plan on doing in the future. I'm thinking of flying down to Nashville to meet with some friends of mine, and maybe spending a day or two in NYC on the way home. Also, for my bookings at Delta hotels, my travel agent gets paid by the hotel. Sure, I'm perfectly capable of booking my own hotel, but if the hotel is going to pay agent fees, then I would LIKE to throw a little business to a friend of mine who really goes the extra mile to get me the best deal possible.

Canada Day is on July 1 and yes there are fireworks. Ottawa is the absolute best place to be on Canada Day. I have been there when the Queen (Head of State of Canada) visited. Amazing!!

I know you like to travel around. You are one frugal shopper I must say. You know how to save money when traveling. I wanted to know how your New York City trip went. Did you enjoy it? Was it what you expected? After reading this discussion you posted I have to say that you definitely make the most of your money. You know how to stretch a dollar and thats a good thing. Enjoy your trip.

Well, I think is wonderful that you can stay on budget and have a great time at the same time. Most people think that without a lot money is almost impossible to have vacations.

That sounds fantastic, what a super bargain. When we went to New York City we actually stayed in East Ruthorford, NJ which was a lot cheaper then staying in the actual city, it is a mere 20 minutes away and our hotel was by the bus stop so we just took the bus in to the city every day. Our hotel cost about half as much as any hotel that was halfway decent in the city and our room was a 2 bedroom suite, we also got free breakfast every day, free wi-fi and free parking. So it worked out great for us. That last night we did stay in the city because I had some Hyatt gift cards, and we wanted to be in Time Square at night. The room was so tiny, I felt like I was in a closet.
