Starting a saltwater hobby

I've started getting interested in starting a saltwater aquarium, in the distant future. Does anyone have any tips on getting started? Supplies I would need, easy fish to keep? Maybe a list of good books for research? I understand it can be expensive to start up, but how expensive is it to maintain once the tank is underway?

It can cost a pretty penny to get started and a good amount to keep it going. I did fresh water as it was much cheapier, even just for the fish.

I am doing fresh water now, and enjoy it. I currently have a convict tank. I was misinformed about how many convicts I could keep in a 36 gallon tank. I didn't have internet when I got them so when the person who gave them to me plus another friend told me I could keep roughly 20 in a tank that size I was happy. Now after getting the internet I found out that a breeding pair would do good in a tank that size. I haven't had any trouble so far and I have either 17 or 18 in the tank. I have no one to give the spare fish to at the moment so I don't know what to do. LOL But thanks for your comment. I was told it was expensive to start but after that not so bad. But I have my doubts too. Maybe I will still with the freshwater tank, but I might still do a little research too. Maybe I'll just work on bettering my freahwater.

I would do your research, and looking into the saltwater. I think you are doing the right thing, most people just start it and not realizing what they are getting into.

Several years ago I considered salt water tanks and discovered the cost of maintenance of the tanks was a lot more than my fresh water tanks. First there is the cost of the tanks and having enough room for larger tanks, as was told my tanks are to small. I started my fish area with 20 gallons and had a lot of them. The maintenance became time consuming, so sold off all the small tanks and moved up to 30 and 50 gallon tanks. The costs will depend on how many and what size of tank or tanks you are considering now. I suggest going to the fish store and decide what fish your considering and then find out how much room the fish need and see what products are being sold in your area. Ask what products the store recommends and if possible visit several stores, as you may get several different answers like I did, but they did all say get the biggest tank (s) I can afford. Good luck

Aquascaping is that like the decorating of the tanks? Do you make your own?
