Are "Responses" Any Different than "Comments on Others' Responses"?

I ask this because sometimes I'll read a 'comment entered below another member's response' and see clearly that the 'commenter' meant to respond to MY START & NOT the response they're commenting. Is it important to tell them what they're doing wrong?

I rarely comment under somebody else's response to the actual post, unless if i want to add my thoughts to the response he/she made. But if we are not violating the mylot guidelines I do not blame the 'commenters' really.

I think it is good to comment as far as possible and I think commenting do makes the discussions alive.

I do not know why as this has been discussed over and over that anyone thinks it is wrong to comment on a response or comment on a comment as mylot pays me to do this and it is not against the guidelines at all. I wish people really would read all of the guidelines and the FAQ's over a number of times to clear up all that confusion,

i think that people are just following the natural flow of a real discussion. i don't think anyone means any harm.

I agree and also just want to share their thoughts from the topic

Oh, and they see no difference between the 'add comment'-button beneath every response & the 'add response'-button just below the discussion-start? Well, it DOES show that they are reading (or at least scanning) all the responses before they put in their own!

I think response and comment are different. I think commenting makes the discussion going like a chat. I think it is good to comment on the response one receive. I always tries to comment as far as possible on the discussions that I have started.

I agree with Moongypsy. No harm intended. And sometimes it is "response" related to the other response that other post to your discussion.

Don't you think myLot ought to put a little 'Respond to Original Post'-button right next to every 'post comment'-button? or would that take up too much 'bandwidth'?

I think you are right there. Maybe the new my lot site will be easier for posting for us.

It is a good question. I think comments are more for continuing a discussion to one response on the topic, and responses are an attempt to look at the topic in a certain way. For example, if a certain thing hasn't been brought up anywhere, and it doesn't feel like leaving it under someone else's response because it would veer that particular discussion into a different direction, then it should be left as a new response. Comments are more to continue the flow of discussion. Also, you can't choose a comment for best response, so I don;t think comments are supposed to be used to bring up a whole new sub-topic on the original topic, unless you are making a counter-point to someone's argument or idea.

What should we do to people who do make a 'response' in a 'comment on another response'?

i have done that i few times, actually. i have read the discussion and meant to respond... however as i go through other members' response i would see that my response would be similar to that of the other member so i would just reply through the comment.

mythociate notice how mylot shows us the correct term above this box it says respond to this discussion, now if I were commenting on some one else's response it would tell me comment on this response so yes mylot thinks they are two different things even if mylotters use all sorts of words for those two terms.mylot does make a distinction though. We really should follow mylots useage b ut people here are pretty damned lazy .

I think that it often happens by mistake. I have seen people who posted a comment below a response even though they acually meant to write a response to the things written by the person who started the discussion. Sometimes people write "sorry, I didn't mean to post it here" so I think that they know the difference between a response to the orginal topic and comment to one of the responses, but when you have posted it you can't move it. Sometimes I think that it happens when new users want to write a response. They have to get used to the way that the site works, and they might make mistakes in the beginning. I have been a member since 2008, but I still remember how confusing I found the site in the beginning.

Maybe they still do not know how myLot works. I think, it is better to tell them if that is what your heart desire but, it is better to tell it on PM. It is because it might embarass them a little bit if they were told on public especially those members who do not know what they are doing.

But isn't "embarassment" a far-better 'teaching-tool'? I know I probably wouldn't be as good a singer as I am if I hadn't got up in front of people and sung (Karaoke, school-choir, family get-togethers).
