No Wonder I Was Feeling Hot

Half a dozen times I've been in that kitchen since tea-time and didn't notice. I've just noticed now when I'm about to wash some cups, etc, in the sink. I'VE LEFT THE GAS ON! Granted, it's only on low, one of the gas rings on the hob..but I wondered why I was feeling a bit warmer than usual. Well, now I know! It's been on since about 5.15pm! No doubt I shall 'confess' to John when he comes in from the snooker so I'm hoping he sees the funny side...as gas/electric bills aren't cheap as most of you will already know.

Hi Janey1966, I'm surprised that you did not detect the gas earlier. I think there could be something wrong with your sense of smell. You should go and have it checked. The leaking gas will definitely emit a smell which a normal person can detect even if it's at a low level. It's a safety requirement that all gas companies have to complied. Have a safe day.

She did not smell it because it had a flame going. Otherwise, you are right, she should have smelled it.

One of my burners doesn't work properly. Now, if THAT had been on low it would've gone out. It's supposed to have a safety cut out feature but - due to my SIL's bf installing it, I don't think it has, therefore I don't use that burner just in case I ever left it on!

Well after your 'is this it?' discussion I did worry that you had turned the gas on to gas yourself, I am sure John will understand, I am sure he would have spent more on the snooker than you did on the gas! Well he's had his entertainment and you've had a gas, sorry poor joke! These things happen, accidents do happen my friend, I am just glad you realized it before you went to bed! We've had the heating on this evening, as it's got cold again, and we have our DVD nite on a Tuesday and mum's front room is cold at the best of times.

Lol. . . I turned the burner up high under a cheese sauce today instead of under the potatoes. Boy it smelled bad when it boiled over. I can surely sympathize with you.

I'm actually quite relieved that I'm 'not alone' although I wouldn't want peoples' dishes to be spoiled on my account.

I've done that a few times, or left the oven on a few times. I think everybody does it, I am amazed this is only your first offence, you should feel quite pleased with yourself. I think that when we are cooking there are quite a lot of things to do, so its not that difficult to forget to turn off the gas, you probably got distracted by something. I usually turn it off automatically as I take something out of the oven, or off the hob, but occasionally I have forgotten. Though I did tend to put something like rice on to cook and then walk off and do something else, and only be reminded by a nasty smell. So I got a steamer, that has a timer, and it has saved my saucepans from regular abuse.

Oh, believe me, I've done it more than once! This time, however, was the longest it's been on (about 4 hours) before I even noticed.

It happens. I recently left a pot on boiling water. You know the smell. Not only is it wasteful but it ruins the pot too plus can be dangerous. I think it is all to do with habits and I really try to understand where I am going wrong and then get it right. I must go into the kitchen a hundred times to just look around.

It happens to the best of us. You heard of the blonde that had her ears burnt. She went to the doctor. The doctor said what happened? She said well, I was iron'in and the boyfriend called and... Oh, said the doc. But he was suspicious. Why both ears he questioned her. Oh, she said, well the guy called me back.

Before I had the gas fireplace put in, I would purposely leave the stove one to keep the place warm in winter. I had electric heating upstairs and the back room, but nothing in the kitchen and living rooms.

That makes sense. I was surprised at how much warmer it got with just that one gas ring on..albeit on low!

I use a plug in space heater for my room because I don't have central heating or cooling. In the spring time, it can be cold in the middle of the night, so I will turn it on so I can sleep and not be too chilly. But when the sun comes up, it starts to get warmer, if I sleep in it can get up to 75 degrees outside, and with the heater on ontop of that, I have woken up plenty of times sweating and confused why I was so dang hot, then I stumble out of bed to turn off the little heater :P

Oh wow, that sounds uncomfortable my friend. I have the same problem with my socks. I wear them in bed as I hate cold feet, then (last night) I took them off halfway through the night as my feet were feeling sweaty at that stage. Our bodies are funny aren't they lol.

Not good... I just came in a bit ago and found that my dear boyfriend had left the coffee maker on--and empty--while we had been out. Again, not a good thing.

It's not the first time he's done this, either. Usually, though, I catch it before we go out the door. This time, I was so distracted by other things that I didn't even notice that he'd been using the machine again. I would like to pretend that I will one day have him trained to double check such things before going out the door, but I know better. We've been together for almost three years; I know which things are losing battles here. *Sigh*

I'm amazed the coffee maker didn't blow up. I did that once babysitting many years ago. I blew up an electric jug kettle (by accident) as there was no water in it. I wasn't asked to babysit after that and my Mum was given the cold shoulder as well!

Wow, thats not that good to forget that. You are lucky nothing happened. My girlfriend does that sometimes. Especially with the oven itself. When she cooks she sometimes forgets to shut the oven off. Well, it was an oversight, thats all. I am sure you ail be more attentive next time.

I lately did that too.. even went out and found out about it some hours later. We have been Lucky since nobody noticed and nothing happened. If it comes to the gas/electricity bills.. over here they are sky high also.. I don't see any difference if we all are home or nobody is.. kind of weird. I already have this struggle/fight with the companies over 10 years.

They're quick to put the prices up but are always reluctant to reduce them. The government isn't that bothered as they receive the VAT from bills. Yes, I have heard that even if appliances such as gas fires are on low people aren't saving any money they might as well turn them up high whilst they're there rather than having them on low when they're not i.e. at work.

i live in a studio type apartment and when it gets too cold i turn the gas on too. LOL i grew up in a tropical climate and sometimes the heaters aren't enough to keep me warm. my gas bills are always higher during winters because of this.

If we didn't have central heating, fair enough, but that's on as well lol.

we do have central heating but it isn't enough for me. i have this habit of walking barefoot at home that is why i really feel the winter cold. the apartment is small (just enough for me and my husband) and i scattered carpets all over the place. whenever the floor gets "icy" for my feet, i'd hop from one carpet to another. LOL

My FIL walks around his house in bare feet which is why the central heating is on sky high lol.
