The length of periods in the schools.

Generally at school we had a period of about 30 to 35 minutes. We all seem to enjoy this duration. However, we had some teachers who would take two consecutive periods making the length of period of about 70 minutes. This was really not interesting for most of us. We used to discuss amongst ourselves what was the fun in keeping the shorter duration of the periods if the teachers are going to decide themselves about the same duration. Share you experience and views about such things, please.

I when I was a child our periods lasted 45 minutes. At that time 45 minutes was the normal duration in elementary schools, high schools and other schools in my country. Some years later some school introduced periods that lasted for 90 minutes, and my school was one of those schools. It was hard to get used to that. 90 minutes without a break felt like a long time and it was hard to stay focused for 90 minutes at a time. Some teachers let the students have a small break instead of continuing for 90 minutes without a break. Officially the teachers were not allowed to do that, but they knew that it was hard for the students to stay focused for 90 minutes so some of them chose to give us a short break (only 5 minutes or something like that)

I think that your teachers were really good teachers. They had shown their concern about the students' learning process rather than just following the offical instructions without worrying about the students. It is quite strange to think that an average student of high school can concentrate well for more than 45 minutes on one subject at all the times. If it is once in a blue moon day that they are asked to attend longer periods without breaks and the students are able to concentrate on the subject being taught. It is not possible for an average student to study that much harder on daily basis. On the contrary, there are many subjects which they have to learn and so if they are given small breaks and then asked to learn different subject, then it would be beneficial to the students. Thanks for contributing to the discussion. Have a nice time...!

When I was a high school student, we had periods for sixty minutes. Now, I am a college student and periods are between two to four hours. I prefer to go one or two times per week.

That is the habit you have cultivated during your school days. I think that you are not used to this longer durations of periods and so you do not like to go to college. It also a fact that in most of the colleges, the attendence of the students is not given great importance. So you are allowed to skip the lectures if you do not feel like attending them. I personally feel that even sixty minute period is too long period for school students. Similarly the duration of two to fours for lectures is also too long duration and hardly anybody can concentrate well without any breaks. Thanks for sharing your views here. Have a nice day...!
