I've always heard that pits were dangerous dogs. Naturally, I've always been cautious of them, but a problem has arisen. My sister has a pit, it's not overly aggressive, but I get always have this fear that he will bite me. I've tried to stay cool when sitting next to it, but I keep getting shaky and I have to move around. I'm trying to get used to the dog, but I've been chased down by dogs so much during my life, that I feel I'll never cope with this fear.

I don't think Pits are bad dogs. It all depends on how you train them. Try to remain calm infront of your sister's dog, because I'm sure the dog can smell your fear and maybe it makes him nervous. But what does he do when you are around?

He just looks around like a normal dog; he doesn't really act agressive. I'm still trying to ge to a point where I can pet him without flinching.

Awwww, maybe you just need time. Don't worry I'm sure as more time passes then you won't have this fear. Just keep trying little by little to pet him.

That is false information. Pitts are only dangerous when they've been trained to be so. Its not natural to them to hurt anyone. They are the most loyal of dog breeds.

I was never afraid of dogs, even if I was bitten by dogs. But I still can understand people who are afraid of dogs. I have a neighbor that literally sticks on the wall when we met on the hallway and I have my dog with me. He's terrified when it comes to dogs, even my dog scares him - and she's such a nice and friendly dog! I don't know how you could get rid of this fear but I can tell you that you should not be afraid of the family dog. You can be careful around strange dogs, but when it comes to the dogs in the family, you shouldn't feel any fear. Dogs know to respect their family members so stop worrying about your sister's dog. You don't need to cuddle him or to sleep with him on the same bed, but I think you can feel confident around him.

Pits only got the bad rep when people started using them for sports and fighting. It is in their nature to fight especially when they're hurt or provoked but I think it is not proper to generalize a certain breed just because the owners are not responsible enough to care and nurture them properly. My brother have 2 pit bulls, a boy and a girl and it is sad that most people think that they're dangerous. As a matter of fact, our guy pit bull thinks he's a lap dog and would do his best to fit in your lap and be petted.
