What do you think of child support?

A friend of mine recently got paid $10.00 AU a fortnight for her 2 year old daughter from the father. How can a single parent afford to pay any expenses relating to the child of question with $10.00 AU a fortnight?
Now, I'm early twenties living with my single mother, my father has only just started paying my mother after I pestered him, after spending months struggling to have food on the table. Although I am an adult, I'm studying full time, meaning I can not support myself with anything more than a part time job. But to the law, my mum doesn't receive child support because I'm too old and so are my sisters, with only one under 18 years (16 years).
What are your opinions on the single parent paying for children with little or no help from the other parent via child support?

Hey I'm in the same bind and my girls are both under 18. That's why I'm doing all I can to just depend on myself to take care of us. It's really some sick joke that these men/women are able to get away with paying such a small amount toward the provision of their children when there are parents out there forced to get two or more jobs just to keep up with the amount of support they were ordered.
