I was just shocked to know that the princess in the story Sleeping Beauty was actually raped and bear twins (while sleeping) in the original version. So, the original story was not actually suitable for kids ;) Just want to share. Do you already know it before?

I heard the tales of Perrault when I was a child and I read them later (I have them somewhere), and I was sure that the Sleeping Beauty was not raped. Perrault wrote tales for children where bad people are bad and good people good, but he winks times to times to the adult reader : there is a double level of reading in his tales, making them interesting for children like for their parents. So, I searched for the Sleeping Beauty sources, and, yes, it is true. Perrault found his source of inspiration in an adult tale called "The Sun, the Moon and Talia" from an Italian author writing for adults, who had himself found his inspiration in a French medieval tale also for adults called "Perceforest". To sum up, in the source used by Perrault to write his tale, the Princess was raped ; in his version, called "the Sleeping Beauty," it never happened. Perrault had a kind of genius : quite all his tales have had several movie adaptation, while all his sources of inspiration are not read anymore. Several authors tried later to rewrite "his" Sleeping Beauty. Except the brothers Grimm, all of them are also forgotten. It is why I would tend to say that his version of the "Sleeping Beauty" is the "original" one and the only that counts. Anyways, thank you for this discussion, I know a bit more about the Sleeping Beauty now.

Wow, nice one. You did your research. I learnt a lot from your response. So, it depends now on our perspective of what should be considered the "original" version of the Sleeping Beauty. Thanks @topffer

Yes, she was totally raped while sleeping. I was shocked too when I read that origin.

The original versions of these fairy tale stories such as the Sleeping Beauty were modified to appeal to the kids. But, still shocking to know the real story.

Not just Sleeping beauty, but most of the original versions of the fairy tales are what we today would consider disturbing. I think people back then were very desensitized compared to us so they were able to listen to stories told that way.
