By my adolescence I had developed reading habit. At that time televisions and computers were not around in this small town of ours.We didn't have a tv set in our family. My elder brother had a home library of his own and I had read most of the books in his collection. Now time has changed. There are more than three tv sets in our family now and we have a couple of desktops also.My elder brother's children never take pain to read or,at least, try to read books in their father's library.Instead, they prefer to watch tv serials on tv and movies on the net.Can it be said that televisions and internet have 'forced' children to give up reading habit?

Sad but true ! However, there are some who still love reading and collecting books like in my own family we are all readers and collectors. My children although very active on the net find time to read lots of books and we have a huge collection of books at home..I feel that it is the responsibility of the parents to inculcate the reading habit in their children and if they are good readers children automatically develop a love for books and reading.

You are absolutely right,&kiran8.It is the responsibility of parents to inculcate in their children the desire to read good books.Unfortunately our generation seems to have forgotten how to write.

@else34 absolutely ! I am a teacher and I see how children are being lured away from books. They find time to go for filmy dance classes, window shopping and spending time playing video games at parlors but I see almost zero attendance when it comes to borrowing books from library and reading.I manage the school library on a rota basis ...I blame the parents and the teachers too because they themselves would rather have their children appear o the TV taking part in dance shows etc ,,, nothing wrong in that as long as it does not become an obsession !

I sometimes wish we didn't have all this technology to run our lives. I preferred reading books and I'm trying to get back into that habit, but I spend so much time at the computer that it takes me ages to read a book.

We have five televisions in our house... only because my daughters bought their own when they went away to school and brought them back home with them. Only 3 are hooked up to the satellite. My older daughter is still quite the reader of books and hopefully my younger daughter will get back to it once she is out of school. Because of the computer I am finding it hard to make time to read.... and write.

When I watched my grandchildren. The Tv went off and no computers until each one did their homework and some reading.
