Big Families - Housework Never Done

United States

My house is in a perpetual mess! I try to clean most every night when the kid's are sleeping. But by the time I get up, the front room looks as though I never did a thing! Oh, the toys are in a different spot, but it's a mess....again. And the kitchen is forever in a messed state. Somebody's always cooking, the sinks are never completely empty. I just want to scream... Calgon, take me away! If you are from or have a big family, how do you deal with the never-ending housework?

Oh I know how you feel. When the kids were younger, it was always that way for me. Now, there is only 3 of us here. However, the baby (he is 21) still believes in eating during the middle of the night, so I always wake up to dirty dishes.

It's the same way here, especially the kitchen with people cooking and eating all hours. I don't think you can ever get caught up, the best you can do is keep up - sometimes

My daughter Naomi always leaves a trail of things behind her wherever she goes.

I had strict parents growing up and house was always immaculate..6 kids and we were trained to be always cleaning after ourselves, so i've kept that habit and as i make dinner i clean as i go, cleaning my room, laundry, cleaning bathroom after i'm done...it's just a habit with me now but it can be a chore for the kids to learn now..not to be perfect but an idea to have them help you!

@Rosekitty , I would love to be like that, but when I try it, my daughter says I have OCD... obsseive cleaning disorder. She say's they're just kids, they don't know. When I try to get Jaden (gr-son, 5 years old) to pick up some, he'll go screaming to Mommy!

@MaddiOashi ..That has nothing to do with OCD..it is something we were taught before that word ever came into existence..hahah..It is your house..make them go by your rules..they can have a messy house if they want, but no one leaves my house till everything is picked back up and put back where they find it..manners is all it is..all my grands say thank you and you're welcome..hug me and always want to stay the night..I have 11 and 1 great granddaughter who is 5..so it doesn't have to be yelling or giving orders, just love and respect and i do try to encourage it on to my children, grands always!..Good luck hun!

Would you believe if I tell you I live in a family that consists of more than 50 members? There has been a tradition of joint families in our country.
