Storage online

A good friend of mine has begun to use the Cloud to store her important stuff online. She is a technical writer and works on computers. I just do not feel safe using something like this that is outside of my grasp. I use a thumb drive, one for my documents and other one for my pictures. What is your opinion of Cloud and what do you think is best for storage?
