Blow by blow what I am doing. . .

My sister had an antique bedroom set she did not want to take with her. I did not want it but she "gave it to me". It is too heavy and large for me. One upright chest was downstairs. It is now in the truck. Thanks to some finagling and adjusting.
I have sold it, sight unseen to a person who has a hubby who can patch it up. I have postponed delivery twice due to not being able to get past the stuff and get it down the stairs.
Please stay tuned for further developments. I may get pictures once it is loaded. It is oak, and over seventy years old.

I bet it is beautiful. I love the craftsmanship of old furniture. Hope you get everything sorted out soon.

It is going to take an entire month I am sure. I could not deal with this set for various reasons, however I have a beautiful antique desk and a wardrobe and some more dressers I will keep.

@GardenGerty Only thing I have left that is antiques are dishes passed down from my grandmother.

@rusty2rusty I have dishes and knick knacks from both sides of my family plus some kitchen ware that belonged to my first husband's grandmother, a lady I loved a lot.

Furniture like that here in the antique areas go for big bucks. From the way you describe it after it is fixed up it could probably sell for $800 or more here. It would probably sell for at least $200 to $300 in the bad repair.

If I felt I had the time I would have tried to sell it elsewhere, but these people are some I have known a long time. I did not get as much as I wanted but I got away from something that has some bad memories for me and was too large for me to continue to deal with. My ex brother in law, who was very abusive, bought it for my sister to have when she left him, but she has really not used it just moved it around. It is like the traditional white elephant.

@GardenGerty Sounds like it was bad juju. I don't blame you for getting rid of it as quickly as possible.

Sad that you could not keep it. Old is gold as they say. We have a lot of old furniture that got shifted here after the ancestral home was sold.

I have several very old pieces, some older than this. This set had some bad history to it and it needed to go someplace that it would be cared for.

@GardenGerty You have a point and that is one reason we never went in for second hand furniture - who knows what unhappy stories they would have stored in there!

I hope they make a nice profit but it requires a good hand to repair many things and redo the finish.
I have seen similar dressers and mirrors priced at $200, but the finish is good. This has a vanity dresser with mirror, cushioned bench, tall dresser and four poster bed with acorn topped posts.
It was very heavy, but some handles and drawers needed repaired and the back of the dresser.

I moved most of the pieces by myself. The largest piece was already downstairs and hubby and I managed. We made a ramp to the truck from the door and I have the moving dolly my dad's dad used when he owned a moving company. It is huge.

@GardenGerty I don't envy you moving at all. I hate it. I don't mind unpacking but I hate packing and the actual moving part.

For the past 15 years I have gotten rid of everything I don't NEED and everyone knows not to give me 'things'--life is so much freer! :O)

That is what my dad has been doing for about that length of time. He and my mom were divorced but he saw what we all went through trying to deal with her stuff.

Heavy oak furniture is beautiful and if you have a huge house and are never going to move, it's fine. But spaces are smaller these days, no one has a big Victorian house all to themselves anymore. And if you have to move, you need some strong men to help you. I hope you have help moving that bed.

I got the bed frame down the stairs, and the vanity dresser and mirror. I have a big old Victorian house that is falling down. It is going to be torn down in fact. My son came and helped us deliver the set where it was going. Big, tall, strong sons are great to have.

It's so hard to get all that done when you're moving, that's for sure. It's great you got that sold and soon to be out of your way. I have many decoration dreams for when I move from my folks' place. The oak sounds nice.

It would be nice if it could have been taken care of. It has some damage and some poorly done repairs. I am hoping when I get it to her she still wants it.I have no one to really help me move it down the stairs.

It is sadly neglected. It went to someone who will restore, repair and refinish it. There was a tall chest, four poster bed with acorn finials and a bench and vanity dresser with full moon mirror. It was in too bad a shape and too heavy for me to deal with.
