"Scared the hell out of me"

We hear this a lot, right? Well who wants 'hell' in them to begin with? Not me buster! But I would be quick to use the phrase. We have a lot of phrases and things we say that when you really think about it do not make a lot of sense. Like the phrase 'save money'. Well, you save money you aren't spending it, right? So why do they say that you'll be saving your money when you have to spend some of it? Literal just doesn't mean literal. Your thoughts.

Of course there are a ton of phrases like this. "She is batsh*t crazy" doesn't literally mean what you said. Scared the Sh*t out of me is another.
