Do we need subject categories?

We don't seem to have subject categories here to enable us to separate film reviews from discussion of Mylot or my favourite bananas (joking with that last one). Tag searching works really well here but subject categories for posts might be handy too. Anyone agree / disagree?

That is a good point, The randomness of the discussion is often quite interesting in itself, though many might also come in with particular subjects in mind. I guess it's swings and roundabouts

I'll have to disagree with @LadyDuck on this one... the old myLot used to be set up so that there were a variety of interest categories. In my opinion, this new layout is nowhere as convenient as the old one was.
That may just be the amount of time I spent on the site talking (I originally joined in 2006). I spent years jumping from category to category as they popped up on the top of the page after a new discussion was posted in them. I guess my main complaint with this layout boils down to "it's change that forces me out of my comfort zone!" which isn't really constructive criticism...
I've been spending most of my time looking for discussions through the Most Recent tab. My complaint with doing that is that after a while, it glitches and the content is repeated. I'd love to see them reintroduce pages for discussions. This infinite scrolling/hidden response threads in discussions thing drives me crazy.

no doubt the site will evolve in time and improve by hopefully introducing or re-introducing features such as category subject options

@arthurchappell Yeah, that's going to be down the road after the bigger issues like the earnings algorithm and bugs are taken care of.
I fully expect them to spring it on us without notice, since that's a habitual thing here.

They used to have categories, so people could gather under them and duke it out over politics and religion, etc. There is a post by admin that suggests using broad categories in your tags, like "family" "religion" "photography", etc. so that the tags will be more useful when it comes to how the system sorts the discussions you see under "Interesting" because it wants them to be interesting to you.

Broad category headings usually suffices, though there is always some overlap. For example a TV documentary review could go under education, TV, or reviews on some lists.

I think that tags are enough in my opinion

I like the idea of having categories too, I think it would encourage more interaction if people can find topics that they're interested in. I hope the admin will consider having them!
