Ever find a music blog or website that is so good it's hard to tear yourself away? Found one! Berussagroup® (berussamusicart.com) The wide range of information on various singers, musicians, composers, etc. could keep you busy all day, if you have some leisure time. Anyway … this site led me to a classical composer and answered my question. Sort of. At another one of my discussions (“Favorite Classical Music Standard?”), wanted to know if anybody knew any famous non-European (or Non-Western) classical music composers. Was wondering about people during the same time period as Mozart or Beethoven. This gentleman is a modern composer: Yuhki Kuramoto (born 1951). Most of the music he composes is for the piano. Still looking for more composers but this is a start. (tsn)

Non European and non American?! I love Russian composers, there are many that are great composer, just to mention a few Borodin, Mussorgsky, Khachaturian, Rachmaninoff, Stravinsky and Tchaikovsky. They are all so great that I cannot even decide which one I prefer.

Funny. I never even think of Americans when I think of classical music composers.

By non-European, you eliminate also American composers like Barber or Bernstein ? I listened to this composer and he is evidently influenced by Chopin in this piece of music. I don't think that you can compose classical music without being somewhere an "European" composer. There was some art music in China, Japan, India or the Arabic world at the time of Mozart, but it was not what we would call "classical". I give you a link to a Marocan nuba from ’al-Hâyik al-Tatwânî written circa 1800.
