Recollection of Death

Now for some serious discussion... A good friend of mine passed away last Thursday. He left behind a wife and two daughters, 12 and 8 years old. You can tell how he lived by all the friends who gathered and talked about his cheerfulness even when he had serious health problems. He will be missed. Looking at his youngest daughter led me to think of my earliest recollection of death. I remember I was 10 when my uncle passed away. It was the first time I saw my mom, my cousins and other relatives deal with death. I didn't know how to feel then and remember I was more curious than sad. Maybe I was too young to understand. How about you, what is your earliest experience of death in the family?

Drowning... I'm fearful of it.

I was twelve when I lost my father.. I didn't understand very much at that time.. I was just frightened and lonely and missed him a lot, we were very close... My mother was grieving and had no time for me. The elders were concerned with my mom than the kids. I guess I had to grow up with it and deal with it years later. That sense of closure came rather late.

@Beatburn As long as elders/ parent know how to deal with this and support the child I guess things get a tad better.. if not we have to struggle on with life.

It's sad when that happens. You were the same age as one of the kids that my friend left behind.

I was about five when my favorite aunt passed away. I tried not to feel sad so I didn't show the people how I missed her during that time. She got a serious illness and she used to live with us so my parents were not able to hide what happened. We just faced the reality that we lost her.

You probably think of her fondly as she is your favorite aunt.

Sorry for your loss. For me it was the time I lost my maternal grandfather. I was 15 at the time. It really affected me because I'm the eldest grandchild and I was the closest to him.

I never got to see any of my grandfathers. They passed away before I was born.

@Beatburn I'm sorry to hear that. I actually dreamed of my grandparents two nights ago. This post of yours is quite timely.
