Lost Bank Cards

Sometimes, The Girl runs a few errands for me, and so I often give her my bank debit card to buy the items she's picking up for me. She's my daughter and I trust her - mostly. But yesterday, we had a little scare. She got to the bus stop and realized she didn't have her wallet in her handbag. We did a thorough search of the house and she went back to the places she'd been that morning to see if they had found it at one of them. Nothing. Eventually, I had to call the bank and report the card lost, just in case some miscreant found it and spent all my money. They were nice and said I could do a temporary hold, in case it turned up. I decided that was a good idea, because I still wasn't completely convinced that it was not going to show up under a pile of dirty clothes in her bedroom. Well, she returned to the shops and in a stroke of brilliance, went through the trash at the coffee shop. And sure enough, there was her wallet. I just called the bank and reinstated the card. I am glad she has all her cards and money back, and I am very glad that I was able to put a hold on the card and prevent any theft but it was still something of a hassle and caused a lot of worry. Have you ever lost your wallet and your credit cards? Did you ever have them stolen? Did you ever throw your wallet away by accident, lol?

I never lost my credit cards, but I had them stolen in Miami. I was glad I had with me all the necessary numbers to call and the photocopy of the credit cards in my hotel room so it was easy to give the credit card numbers, expiration and so on.

The first thing I do with any card is memorize the 16 digit number, the expiration date and the security code. It's helpful if I want to buy something online, I don't have to look in my wallet.

@Rollo1 I "usually" remember the 16 digit number, but I hit my head badly and I fainted when I was robbed, I was still confused when I called the Visa card number. I am glad I called immediately, my card had been used exactly 7 minutes after it was robbed.

@LadyDuck Sorry you got robbed Anna, but what a brilliant idea to have photocopies of your cards. I'd never have thought of that. I do have a photocopy of my passport.

I might suggest a shared account. You both have cards, and it's linked online to your account so you can transfer money. This way you control whats in there. Or perhaps make it her account, you transfer money for those errands, but its still her account to help teach her more awareness of such things. Either way, I am glad it was found!

Oh no, I will never link my account to hers. She was just doing some shopping errands for me. I did try to get her to get her paypal set up properly so if she needed to borrow money, I could send it to her, but she's so haphazard about things like that.

@Rollo1 paypal, not a bad idea there. I think some banks let you send money to accounts with no linking. Some also set up ways to use your cell as your card, which meant I had to start password locking my cell.

I never lost my wallet or threw it away but I did have my purse stolen one time with my wallet in it. I called the bank and they advised me to cancel all my cards and wait on new ones, which I did but what a hassle. What happend was two teen age boys were walking by me and grabbed my bag off my shoulder, I tried chasing after them but couldn't keep up with them. I did call the authorities but they were never found, no Surprise.

At least you were able to cancel the cards. I haven't had anything stolen from me, thank goodness.

@Rollo1 You are fortunate that you have never had any stolen from you.

I've lost cards yes, but I've always cancelled them before there could be any fraudulent transactions. Fortunately I've never had any stolen.

When we were first married and did not even have a bank account yet, my husband cashed his paycheck and lost his wallet before we even had a chance to pay the rent or bills. It was such a mess, we had to borrow money from the bank to pay the rent. Looking back, I have no idea why they even loaned money to 2 young kids with hardly any money and very small paychecks.

Thank goodness they did. I have had some lean times where I had to scrape together the money for the rent. Things have been a bit easier the last few years, but anything can change at any moment.

@Rollo1 It is funny, at the time we felt like it was the end of the world, but we have used it as a "duh" moment for the kids, you know, learn from our mistake.
