Another Catastrophic Hajj Occurs

The end result again of one of The most important religious festivals, for those who go there to celebrate, has once more ended in disaster, this year around 800 dead and many more wounded. These tragic events seem to happen every year, to a greater or lesser degree, and have become something of an expected norm, even though the 'Host' country has supposedly put stronger safety measures in place. In fairness, such an overwhelming mass of people, all descending on the same place, at the same time, has to be the stuff of nightmares, for the places involved, yet whatever mishaps and tragedies happen, the followers continue to come, regardless. So is there an answer to this huge problem, other than banning such a huge religious festival to make it safer?....or will it continue as a sad fact of life, just as now.

I fear that as long as the Saudi's can make a lot of money (and get a lot of kudos) by encouraging the pilgrims, stuff like this will continue. Health and Safety doesn't seem to be the priority.

Not sure the Saudis' even know what H and S is nor how it fits in with the Ruling family's wishes... which are after all paramount.

The authorities cannot stop them, this tradition is too important for them. As usual, religion kills.

They can't stop them. The Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam. If they tried to block people from making the pilgrimage, they would put themselves in danger of attack by extremists. Best to let people do as they wish.
