Environmental officials in Norway, are asking Hikers, and walkers, to do just this. In an effort to gain more information found within the excrement that could help them learn more about Norway's dwindling Brown bear population. These bears once flourished in Norway but rampant hunting in the early 20th Century destroyed their numbers, of the remaining, most are now found along Norway's eastern border with Sweden, Finland and Russia. But the method to poo-picking, in order to avoid contaminating the samples with human DNA, they advise is to "Avoid touching the droppings - turn a plastic bag inside out to pick them up". So why not go on a 'poo-picking' ramble this weekend, and help researchers learn more, about a resident Brown Bear?... source:bbc.co.uk

A trip to Norway to collect bear dung would certainly quality as a holiday with a difference.

But are you sure "Holiday" is the right word...unless you happen to be a conservation at any cost Nut...of which there are probably many, but count me out!

@bookbar I believe that the accepted phrase is a "Crap Holiday".

Why don't they just set up a bear patrol group. That way they will have crews going out with rubber gloves and rubber boots and sample containers. Not everyone walks around with a plastic bag or plastic gloves.

@bookbar Well, if they want something done, they would have to pay. I don't know how many people would do that for free.

Maybe because those patrols would require wages for their services that the public would provide as a 'freebie'

I'll bet there will be quite a few volunteer pooper picker-uppers. :)

There is one rule I would surely follow "Avoid touching the droppings...", even the idea to use a plastic bag is not tempting.

@bookbar LOL, just like you I do not want to handle those things no matter if wearing rubber gloves and plastic bags. It's one of a reason why I do not want a cat or a dog.

Is brown bear poo really that easy to spot over other animals'? Knowing my luck I'd end up cleaning up after other people's dogs or something?
