Music Can Make You Feel Old

There's nothing that can make you feel better than music. The beauty of a melody, the way lyrics can penetrate your heart, and the voice or the instruments can move you in a million different ways. But, music can also make you feel really OLD. That happened earlier this week when Frankie Ford, who had the 1959 hit "Sea Cruise," died. Although that song came out before I was born, it seems to me my brother had that 45 (he's seven years older than I am). Dozens of acts have covered the song (and, ironically, the big hit version was itself a cover of a version recorded by its writer, Huey "Piano" Smith), but when I mentioned this classic oldies tune as being the "big hit" of Ford, the general replies were shrugs and, "Never heard of it." Oh, do I feel old. Pass the Geritol.

Then we must be as old as mankind by now.

Frankie who? I guess I'm young. But I'd much rather listen to Louis and Ella than anything I hear on pop radio these days.

My musical taste extends to far before I was born, so in a way, I always know songs that no one else remembers. But I do understand. Just recognizing a tune on the radio can date you.

Music can actually make you feel different things about yourself. If you want to feel young, make sure to listen to a playlist that will keep you energized.

So many times on TV, someone will be raving about the most popular song in America when my husband and I look at each other and realize neither of us has ever heard it. But I do love music, especially when I'm singing in Church.
